You get to choose your own path and can pursue one or more majors, minors, and other experiential learning opportunities while establishing a core foundation in business fundamentals.

During your first two years at Saint Mary's, we have a recommended set of courses that will give you a strong foundation in a wide range of business concepts. There's also room to choose interesting courses from other faculties. In years three and four, you will have a range of options that will let you customize your degree in ways that appeal to your interests and ambitions. At that point:

  • You can choose from the largest number of majors in the region.
  • You can take a double major.
  • You can choose to do a co-op term or not. Unlike some programs, there is no requirement to do a co-op.

AASCB and EQUIS logos

Founded in 1802, Saint Mary’s is one of the oldest, most established universities in Canada. The commerce program, the cornerstone of the Sobey School of Business, has existed since 1934 and has been the choice of generations of Canadian business leaders.

Today, our business school is internationally recognized with AACSB International and EQUIS accreditations. This means our programs have passed rigorous standards of quality and have been found to be among the best in the world. It is the only Business school in the region with both accreditations.

A rendering of the Sobeys Inspiration Hub

The Sobey’s Inspiration Hub is a remarkable new space for discovery, collaboration and innovation. The space features new classrooms, the university art gallery, research centres, retail labs, maker spaces, project studios and dedicated rooms for student societies.

It is also the new home of two incredible centres of business programming and research: the Arthur L. Irving Entrepreneurship Centre and the David Sobey Centre for Innovation in Retailing and Services.

An informal and engaging open gathering space features an expanded campus store, coffee shop and eateries with space to host a large celebration for up to 100 people.

The Sobey School of Business strikes a perfect balance between being large enough to be nationally relevant and impactful while still being able to offer you a welcoming and personal experience.

Located in downtown Halifax, the largest city in the region and one of Canada’s fastest growing, Saint Mary’s students have networking and career opportunities often not available in smaller communities.

Developing a hands-on learning experience is a part of what we offer to enhance your education further. You have the option to explore a variety of experiential learning opportunities:

Add hands-on, professional experience to your resume though our co-operative education program. You are encouraged to complete three paid work terms in challenging professional workplaces across Atlantic Canada. Options are available for some national and international placements.

Cooperative education allows you to explore potential career paths, gain real work experience and impress future employers while building a network of contacts in your chosen field.

For more information, visit Saint Mary’s Co-op Education website.

Note: Our program recognizes that, for various reasons, co-op programs are not appropriate for all students. Unlike many schools, a co-op placement is not a degree requirement.

Expand your horizons and gain new perspectives by immersing yourself in a new culture. Opportunities are available for you to study abroad. Bachelor of Commerce students can take part in our global learning initiatives.
