What’s your favourite extracurricular at SMU?
When I was a student, I loved intramurals and signed up for practically every sport that they offered. In my first year, this was a great way to make lifetime friends, and I truly cherish the experience.
What’s one piece of advice you always give future students?
Don't rush the process. This is your journey, and figuring it out as you go is part of the fun. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself—situations change, and you learn from them.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I am the third generation of McOnies to graduate with an undergraduate degree here at Saint Mary’s University.
What’s one thing you wish you had known when you were applying to university?
I wish I had done more research on the school's study abroad opportunities. I was always fascinated by these programs and really wish I had taken part in them during my time at Saint Mary’s. If you have not already, check out the Centre for Global Engagement!

The city has so much coastal beauty with picturesque waterfront views, beaches and fresh sea air.
If you could take any course at SMU for fun, what would it be and why?
I'd love to take a forensic science course. It would be fascinating to learn how to solve crimes, analyze evidence and find the truth. It is such a rewarding career to make a difference, uncovering cases and bringing justice to victims and families.

What’s one thing you love about SMU campus?
I come from a smaller town and initially felt overwhelmed by the idea of moving to Halifax. I found that Saint Mary's offers a great. The campus is the perfect size, located in a quieter part of the city, but still just a 15-minute walk to the city center.
What’s one piece of advice you always give future students?
University is a fresh start. It's an opportunity to try new things, meet new people, and step out of your comfort zone. Join clubs that interest you, and don't hesitate to leave your residence door open during the first few days to meet your neighbors. Push yourself to be social during those first few weeks!
What’s one thing you wish you had known when you were applying to university?
I wish I had known that I didn't need to have everything figured out right away. There are so many career paths I never even knew existed, and university is the perfect time to explore different areas of study. In fact, many students end up switching their major, so it’s okay to take your time and discover what truly interests you.
If you could take any course at SMU for fun, what would it be and why?
It would be a tie between CRIM 4542: Serial Murder, because I’ve recently started listening to a lot of true crime podcasts and I find the psychology and investigation behind it fascinating, and ENGL 1260: What Not to Wear, because I’ve always been curious about fashion and how it reflects personal identity and culture.

I watched the 2024 solar eclipse on campus with my classmates. It was our last day of classes before graduation, and the eclipse started just as classes ended. The Faculty of Science gave out eclipse glasses, and we all went to the football field to watch it. It felt like such a special way to end my undergrad!

I would take one of the first-year astronomy courses because I would love to use the observatory! I've gotten to go up there a few times, but I want to see it in action.
What’s one thing you wish you had known when you were applying to university?
Picking a university can feel like an overwhelming decision. When I was applying, I wish I had known how many resources were available to learn about different universities. As you're getting familiar with your options for post-secondary, I encourage you to attend events like campus tours or open houses to get to know a school both inside and out. Meet with a recruiter and ask them your questions. There are so many ways to discover which school is right for you!

Antarctica! In high school we had a motivational speaker address the graduating class. He shared photos of himself water skiing in every continent, and I've wanted to visit ever since. I'd be interested to learn more about the impacts of travel to a sensitive area like Antarctica.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
South Africa and the Philippines. South Africa offers a rich mix of culture, history and natural beauty. The diversity in landscapes and experiences makes it a place I’ve always wanted to explore, and I would love to visit the Nelson Mandela Museum. The Philippines, on the other hand, draws me in with its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and the fact that it’s made up of over 7,000 islands. The friendly people and amazing culture make it a top destination for me.

Maria serves mature, upgrading and visiting students.
If you could describe SMU in three words, what would they be?
Diverse, comfortable and welcoming. SMU has students from all walks of life, and our diversity allows everyone to learn about new cultures. The campus is safe and comfortable. From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt this could be my future home for years to come. SMU is also very welcoming. Coming from a different school, I was unsure about adjusting to a new campus, but within my first five minutes, I was welcomed with kind words, smiles, and introductions.
What is one piece of advice you always give future students?
Ask your classmates or dorm neighbours to grab a coffee or food around campus or at the meal hall. During my first year living in the dorms, my dad suggested I ask my hallmates to lunch a couple of times a week, and before I knew it, I walked out with many lifelong friends. You may be scared and nervous during your first month, but everyone else is also feeling that way, so taking the leap to be the person to make introductions can go a long way!
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would travel back to Japan. I adored the people and the food that I discovered while I was there. The trip made me appreciate the art of culinary and long-standing traditions and I walked away with many life lessons I keep near to my heart today.
