Program options
Diploma in Engineering
A two-year Diploma in Engineering provides students with a basic understanding of scientific principles and a foundation in engineering mathematics, design and technical communication.
After completing the Diploma, students may complete a Bachelor of Engineering in Resource Engineering at Saint Mary's, or continue their final two years of a Bachelor of Engineering degree at Dalhousie University in the fields of Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Industrial, Chemical and Environmental Engineering.
Bachelor of Engineering in Resource Engineering
The four-year Bachelor of Engineering in Resource Engineering prepares graduates to contribute to the design, development, and management of large-scale resource projects that balance technical, economic, environmental and societal considerations. Students can enter the Bachelor of Engineering in Resource Engineering from day one at Saint Mary’s, or enter into Year 3 of the program after completing the Diploma in Engineering. Students in this degree program choose between two program options: Renewable Energy Engineering or Mining Engineering.

Hands-on Opportunities
At Saint Mary’s, we recognize that hands-on learning is crucial to offering an excellent engineering education. Disassemble and rebuild common household devices in Design I. Build robots and compete against your classmates in Design II. Test the strength of structures you’ve designed and built in Mechanics of Materials. Our small class sizes allow us to offer educational experiences you won’t get elsewhere.
Student Experience
The Division of Engineering has a close-knit student body with lots of engaging events. The student-run Engineering society hosts social events and a year-end banquet. You’ll also find support at study nights on campus, and in recent years students have enjoyed 3D print night, racing duct tape boats and a dodgeball tournament!
Two years of cross-curricular course work prepares students for multiple fields.
All of our research faculty have PhDs, and we have field experts in chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil, computer, and biomedical fields.
Engineering studies at Saint Mary’s provides the first two years of an engineering degree in association with neighbouring Dalhousie University. After completing the Diploma in Engineering, a student can also remain an extra year or two at Saint Mary’s to pursue a two-and-a-half or three-year Bachelor of Science degree with Diploma in Engineering or a four-year Bachelor of Science, Major in Mathematics with a Diploma in Engineering.
Work and Co-op Opportunities
Build your résumé and gain valuable experience while completing your Engineering degree at Saint Mary’s. Engineering students can apply to co-op after completing their first year, combining their academic studies with paid, industry-based work experience. Students in the Bachelor of Engineering in Resource Engineering can graduate with up to 16 months of co-op work experience.
There are also opportunities to gain hands-on experience right on campus. Students can work alongside professors on faculty research as early as the end of first year or become a Teaching Assistant or Peer Tutor beginning in second year. These experiences allow you to develop practical and professional skills, build connections and strengthen your résumé before you graduate.
