BComm Co-op Program

Earn academic credit for co-op placement
At Saint Mary’s University’s Sobey School of Business, co-op isn’t just work experience. It can now count toward your degree.
Bachelor of Commerce students can earn academic credit for co-op placements. Eligible students receive three credit hours per work term, for up to nine total credits across three placements, all while gaining paid, hands-on experience.
Co-operative Education (co-op) gives you the opportunity to put what you’re learning in the classroom into practice through paid, full-time work experience. By completing co-op work terms during your degree, you can explore different career paths, build your professional network and graduate with valuable work experience already on your résumé.
Co-op also allows you to explore different career paths and discover what kind of work interests you. During each placement, you’ll set professional goals, develop new skills and reflect on what you’ve learned.
The program includes career coaching, résumé and interview support and personalized job matching. Placements are available across Canada and internationally, in fields like accounting, finance, marketing, tech and more.
Need support? Our Career and Experiential Learning (CEL) team is ready to help. From advice on career pathways and preparation, to identifying and securing co-op work terms, CEL staff are ready to help you build a record of industry experience to compliment your academic record and strengthen your pre-graduation journey search.
If you’re applying to a Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) degree program, you can apply directly into the BComm/co-op stream. Once you are accepted to SMU, you’ll be contacted in your first year with information about your co-op options and how to get started.
Not sure about co-op yet? You don’t have to decide before starting at Saint Mary’s. Current students can apply to the Co-operative Education Program after completing their first or second year, depending on their program and eligibility requirements. To be eligible for the BComm/co-op stream, you must have 45–69 credit hours completed, declared major, minimum 2.7 CGPA for non-credit co-op or 2.5 CGPA for for-credit co-op.
