Hannah Birru

Halifax, Nova Scotia
October 2020

Hannah Birru has big aspirations. Thanks to receiving the Sobey National Innovators Scholarship, she looks forward to earning her Bachelor of Commerce majoring in economics with a global focus, and has goals to work as an economist with the International Monetary Fund or World Bank to help solve the challenges facing the global economy. “You are allowing me to focus on the most important aspect of school: learning,” she says. “I hope that one day I will also be able to empower students to achieve their goals as you’ve helped me.”

Hannah works part-time as a sales associate at The Source and tutors on weekends and evenings. To connect with her Ethiopian culture and heritage, Hannah volunteers with the Berhan Educational Culture Centre teaching Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language, to three-, four-, and five-year-olds. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking and exploring the streams, brooks, creeks, and other hidden gems of Nova Scotia.
