Know a student who’d be a great fit for Saint Mary’s?
Share your positive experience and help encourage the next class of SMU students! Current students, faculty, staff and alumni can refer prospective students to join the SMU community.
Referral program perks:
- Any student referred to Saint Mary's will be connected with the Recruitment team and will receive an application fee waiver.
- Referred Canadian students who enrol will be entered to win $1,000 to spend at the Campus Store to kick off their SMU journey.
- Referred international students who enrol will receive a $1,000 Tuition Award credited to their student account.
- Any current student who refers an international student will receive a $2,000 tuition credit when that student successfully enrols at Saint Mary's.*
- As a thanks for sharing the SMU experience, anyone in the SMU community who makes a referral will be eligible to win a $500 Campus Store gift card.

Submitting referrals is easy: email referrals@smu.ca or fill out the form below and the Recruitment team will:
- Contact the prospective student directly
- Guide them through the application process
- Provide an application fee waiver code so they can apply for free

Applications open now for Fall 2027: International applicants are encouraged to apply to SMU prior to March 1, 2027. Prospective students should apply as early as possible to allow time for admissions processing and study permit applications.

Referring Student Eligibility
To participate in the International Student Referral Program, the referring student must:
- Be a currently enrolled Saint Mary's University student at the time the referral is submitted.
- Have an active SMU student account and valid A# (Student ID Number).
- Submit the referral before the prospective student applies to Saint Mary's University.
- Ensure the prospective student has given permission for their contact information to be shared with SMU.
Prospective Student Eligibility
The referred student must:
- Be a non-Canadian citizen or non-Permanent Resident of Canada.
- Be applying to Saint Mary's University as a new international student.
- Not have already applied to SMU prior to the referral being received.
- Meet all admission requirements for their intended program.
- Enroll and pay tuition at Saint Mary's University following admission.
Award & Referral Payment Terms
- Referred students who are admitted and enroll at Saint Mary's University will receive a $1,000 CAD tuition award applied directly to their student account.
- The referring student will receive a $2,000 CAD credit applied to their Saint Mary's University student account after the referred student has enrolled and paid tuition.
- Awards and student credits cannot be transferred, exchanged for cash, or applied to another individual.
- All awards are subject to applicable university policies and procedures.
Multiple Referrals
- There is no limit to the number of eligible students a current SMU student may refer and there is no limit on the number of referral credits that a current student may earn: students earn a referral credit for each international undergraduate student who enrols and pays tuition. Each referred student may only be associated with one referring student.
- In cases where multiple referrals are submitted for the same prospective student, SMU will recognize the first complete referral received.
Program Administration
- All referrals must be submitted via the online form or by email to referrals@smu.ca from the current student’s @smu.ca email address and include:
- Referring student's name
- A# (Student ID Number)
- Prospective student's name
- Prospective student's email address (cc them on referral email)
- Prospective student’s location (city, province, country)
- Enrolment Services reserves the right to verify eligibility and supporting information before awarding any referral incentives.
- Saint Mary's University reserves the right to amend, suspend, or discontinue the program at any time without prior notice.
- Decisions regarding eligibility, referrals, admissions, and awards are final.
