Dr. J. Michael (Mike) Durland is Group Head, Global Capital Markets and Co-CEO of Scotia Capital. He is successful role model for business students at Saint Mary’s University.

A native Nova Scotian, Mike Durland attended Middleton Regional High School, followed by his graduation from Saint Mary’s in 1987 with a Bachelor of commerce in Finance (cum laude). He subsequently earned his Ph.D. in Finance and Operations Research from Queen’s University.

As Co-CEO of Scotia Capital, he shares primary responsibility for the overall management of Scotia Capital’s operations worldwide. As Group Head, Global Capital Markets, he also has overall responsibility for Scotia Capital’s capital markets operations on a global basis. He has been actively involved in the development, execution and management of global Capital’s strategy, risk operations and human capital management. He also represents Global Capital Markets on key internal bank committees. Since joining Scotiabank’s investment banking division in 1993 as a Senior Manager, Derivative Produces, he has held numerous positions.

He is an active supporter of many community groups and charities, including a variety of charities in his home town of Middleton, NS, the United Way of Greater Toronto, the Mississauga North Stars Hockey Club, and the Froebel Education Centre.

In March 2009, he addressed the students and the business community at the Sobey School of Business commerce Society dinner. Mike has a great passion for Saint Mary’s and says that the school has played an important role in his life. He credits Saint Mary’s and his professors with helping him to develop a life-long love of learning and a passion for finance. He met his wife, Catherine, at Saint Mary’s and she graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting.

The honorary degree from Saint Mary’s recognizes Mr. Durland’s leadership, his dedication to the community and his commitment to business excellence.
