Garnet Brown has had a distinguished record of political and community service and leadership in business. Brown has been the President and Director of A.G. Brown and Son Limited for 45 years, was one of the two founders of Halifax Cablevision and one of the founders and Director of Dartmouth Cable Television.

He founded the brokerage firm, A.G. Brown and Son Limited with his father in the mid-fifties. A.G. Brown and Son remains one of Atlantic Canada's leading brokerage firms and the recipient of many awards from leading manufacturers. Brown has had numerous business affiliations including Director of the Investors Group. He has also been actively involved in elements of community life from a role as National Director of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards to a supporter of sports and business studies.

Brown served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the province of Nova Scotia in the Halifax-Eastern Shore riding from 1969-1978 with portfolios including Minister of Highways and Public Works, and Minister of Tourism. As Minister of Tourism, Brown purchased the Bluenose II, turned it over to the province and led a fundraising campaign for its restoration. He has received numerous awards for his government service, and is a member of the Nova Scotia Hall of Fame. Brown will receive an honorary Doctor of Commerce from Saint Mary's University.
