Collective Bargaining

Collective bargaining is how universities in Canada, like Saint Mary's University, come together with the different unions across their campuses to negotiate and come to a collective agreement, or written contract, between an employer and employee unions. Collective bargaining is a regular and important part of labour relations.

Collective agreements are often multi-year contracts, and the cycle of collective bargaining is a normal part of university operations. To begin bargaining, at least one party must provide notice. Then the process begins, with dates being arranged to negotiate and share proposals.
