Streetcar Expansion and Halifax Development: 1900-38

This paper considers the temporal relationship between transport network expansion and the development of residential addresses and commercial establishments in Halifax between 1900 and 1938. Other authors have noted transport can fit three types of relationships. Transport can pre-date, post-date, or occur concomitantly with other types of development. The relationship that pertains to Halifax is being sought by the following.

The methodology used to find the relationship for peninsular Halifax has four steps. Together, they count the residential addresses and commercial establishments, measure the transport network, and divide the area so change can be easily noted. When analysing data, growth rates are compared to see temporal relationships in Halifax.

When analysis is complete, a clear temporal relationship pattern is not found. The conclusion suggests some reasons why definite conclusions cannot be made.
