Micro Experiential Learning

Micro Experiential Learning (MEL) gives students opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom to short, meaningful real-world projects. Through MEL, students build and demonstrate skills while working with industry, community, and university partners. MEL opportunities can be part of courses, participation incentives, or other eligible learning activities.

When MEL experiences are recorded through Career360°, they can be recognized on students’ Experience Record, allowing students to showcase their learning, skills, and experiences.

MEL Experience Criteria

To qualify as a Micro Experiential Learning experience, an opportunity will typically:

  • Require 1 to 10 hours to complete.
  • Include a reflective learning component.
  • Be delivered in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format.
  • Provide opportunities to identify and develop competencies from the Career360° Competency Framework.

Examples of MEL Experiences

  • Hackathons
  • Conferences
  • Workshops
  • Speaker series
  • Competitions
  • Career and networking events
  • Community engagement or volunteering
  • Other approved experiential learning opportunities

Through MEL, students can:

  • Apply classroom learning to real-world situations and challenges.
  • Explore career paths and areas of interest.
  • Develop transferable competencies and professional skills.
  • Build industry knowledge and expand their professional network.
  • Gain recognition for learning and skills developed beyond the classroom.
  • Record completed experiences on their Experience Record, creating evidence of their skills and experiences to support job applications, scholarship applications, and future educational opportunities.
