Named Entrance Awards

Saint Mary's offers a number of named entrance scholarship/bursary awards. These awards all have different eligibility criteria, such as community involvement, extracurricular activities, academic achievement, or financial need. You do not apply for them individually. To apply for all of these awards, simply fill out the Named Entrance Award form.

BBSAB Award

  • Criteria/ Description: Awarded annually to graduates of a secondary school from Bermuda, The Bahamas, Saint Lucia, Antigua or Barbados.  The entrance scholarship is awarded based on an 80% average on the CXC (CSEC), IB, or Canadian/ American/ British patterned high school results Award selection will be determined by Saint Mary's University, Admission and Recruitment Office, and based upon:  Academic success - 80% or higher average; evidence of strong community engagement; and a reference letter from a Saint Mary's alumnus from the Caribbean (if this is not possible a letter from the high school principal would be acceptable)

Coy Family Scholarship - Entrance

Scholarships will be awarded and renewed based on outstanding academic achievement (90% out of high school and GPA 3.7 for renewable scholarships) and continued full-time enrolment at Saint Mary's University. The scholarship is renewable and may be awarded to a student for a maximum of four consecutive years, normally consisting of one entrance scholarship and up to three renewable scholarships. The scholarship may be renewed provided the recipient continues to meet the academic criteria outlined above.  In the event that a student does not meet the requirements for renewal, another recipient will be selected to receive the scholarship (and potentials remaining renewals) based on the academic criteria outlined above.

David Keith Athletic Award

  • Criteria / Description: Awarded to a graduate of a Nova Scotia high school enrolled in full-time studies at Saint Mary's University and who is a member of one of the University's varsity athletic teams. Preference will be given to students entering their first year of studies. The award will be presented to a student who demonstrates well-rounded credentials through participation/leadership in athletics and school affairs/community service. Recipients must also demonstrate above average academic achievement with a minimum entering average as required by the applicable governing body. Award is not renewable.

Elaine Leventhal Memorial Scholarship - Leadership - Entrance

  • Criteria / Description: Awarded annually to a full-time, undergraduate student who has a high academic standing from grade 12 or equivalent.  The student must also demonstrate financial need and have a record of leadership and community service.  This award is renewable each year of the recipient's four-year degree at Saint Mary's, permitted they meet the terms as outlined below.  The scholarship will be renewed based on good academic standing with a minimum of 4.0 credits obtained at Saint Mary's University.  Students must demonstrate financial need and a record of leadership and service to the University and wider community.  In the event that a student does not meet the requirements for renewal, another recipient will be selected to receive the scholarship ( and potential remaining renewals) based on the criteria outlined above.  This student must be in the same year of study as the student who was previously receiving the scholarship so as to ensure that there continues to be scholarship representation within each year of study of the undergraduate degree program at Saint Mary's University.

Gerald and Carole Regan Scholarship

Goman Memorial Equestrian Scholarship

This encompasses dressage, other disciplines of horseback riding, as well as teaching and volunteering, in that order of preference. If there is no eligible entering student, the award may be given to a continuing student who demonstrates an active association with an equestrian program as well as satisfactory academic achievement (3.0 QPA).

Harrison McCain Scholarship

Kevin Cleary Memorial Scholarship - Entrance

Laurie W Smith Memorial Scholarship

Nova Scotia Power University Scholarship

  • Criteria / Description:  Open to students in any field of study at the 10 Nova Scotia universities and colleges listed below. It's a $1,500 entrance scholarship that's renewable for three or four years, depending on the length of the recipient's undergraduate program. The scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, community involvement, involvement in extracurricular activities and personal attributes.
    • Applicants must be accepted for full-time study in an undergraduate degree program at one of the following 10 universities and colleges: Acadia University, Dalhousie University, Mount Saint Vincent University, Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, St. Francis Xavier University, St. Mary's University, Cape Breton University, University of King's College, Université Sainte-Anne.
    • Scholarships are not be awarded for pursuit of graduate studies or made in combination with any other Nova Scotia Power scholarships.
    • Recipients must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and permanent residents of Nova Scotia for at least three years, two of which are immediately prior to high school graduation.
    • Scholarships and bursaries are non-transferable.

Options and Opportunities (O2) Entrance Award

Robert (Bob) Shaw Commerce Scholarship

Sobeys Scholar Award

The recipient must demonstrate superior academic achievement (90% out of high school) and leadership in community service. The recipient will also receive the opportunity to apply to work as a summer intern for Sobeys Inc. This opportunity will be available during each summer of the student's undergraduate degree, provided the student continues to be enrolled in the Faculty of Commerce (a total of three summer internships), and demonstrates a GPA of 3.0. *Student must maintain 3.67 GPA in order to receive $3,500 scholarship second, third and fourth year.

Stephanie MacDonald Entrance Scholarship

Student Leadership Excellence Awards

  • Criteria / Description: Awarded to incoming Saint Mary's students with a desire to live in residence and contribute to the spirit and fabric of Saint Mary’s University. Recipients will have demonstrated a commitment to extracurricular pursuits and a strong track record of involvement and contribution to their home community and school through student government and student lead initiatives, volunteer organizations,athletics, and community institutions. These awards are intended to attract students to live on-campus within our residence community and enable them to continue their legacy of involvement, passion, and enthusiasm. We desire to fill our residence buildings with students who embody the principles of community involvement and spirited participation to create and foster the ideal residence and campus community. Award recipients will live in residence in Single Student Housing and participate in the meal plan (with a mandatory or voluntary plan). Recipients will be expected to contribute to residence life and campus life in measurable ways (i.e. attendance at floor meetings,programming, residence and campus events, positions within SMUSA, attend varsity athletic events, participate in campus societies, involvement in intra-murals).In addition recipients will be offered the opportunity to participate in targeted involvement initiatives specific to award winners. This award is renewable based on the recipients maintaining a high level of demonstrated residence, campus, and community involvement, a history of respectful and exemplary conduct in our residence buildings, and satisfactory academic performance (2.0 GPA).

TD Insurance Alumni Scholarship

The student must meet the university admission requirements with intentions of pursuing a fulltime, undergraduate degree program. Recipient must be the dependant of a Saint Mary’s University alumnus/a. Guardian’s name, graduation year and undergraduate or graduate degree program will be required. Students should be identified as deserving of recognition in the area of community service. A minimum of 3.0 GPA must be required for renewability.

 Techsporation Science Award

    Techsploration gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Saint Mary’s University in providing a renewable $2,000 scholarship to young women pursing a Science Degree.Applicants may include both Techsplorer Alumnae as well as other female Grade Twelve graduates of participating Nova Scotia Techsploration schools.

    All female Grade Twelve students may apply whether or not she was on the school team, if:    

    • She has been accepted into a Saint Mary’s University, Faculty of Science program as a full-time student (30 credit hours). In order for the scholarship to be renewed the student must maintain full time status each academic year. 

    This scholarship will be evaluated by the Assistant Registrar, Admission and Scholarships,Saint Mary’s University in consultation with Techsploration and will be awarded based on a combination of:

    • academic achievement: 80% average upon leaving high school (in order for the scholarship to be renewed on an annual basis a minimum 3.0 GPA must be maintained)
    • one page essay
    • completion of the Techsploration Science Award Application Form (PDF)
    • If more than one candidate is identified as a finalist, we may consider financial need as further criteria.

    The scholarship is valued at $2,000 per year and is renewable on an annual basis.

Tim and Bernardine Moore Barbados Entrance Scholarship

  • Criteria / Description: To provide an annual award to an individual from Barbados who is entering the first year of studies at Saint Mary's University who demonstrates academic achievement. Preference will be given to the applicant who demonstrates leadership skills and/or financial need. If no applicant fits the above criteria, the scholarship will be given to a continuing student from Barbados who is enrolled in full time studies at Saint Mary's University who has a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to the applicant who demonstrates leadership skills and / or financial need. If no applicant from Barbados meets these criteria, the scholarship will be given to a continuing student from the Caribbean Islands who meets the criteria.

Bob Kelly Bursary in Commerce - Entrance

  • Criteria / Description: Awarded annually to a full-time, undergraduate student from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia enrolled in the Faculty of Commerce who demonstrates financial need. The bursary will be awarded and renewed based on strong academic achievement (85% out of high school or QPA 3.0 for Renewable Scholarships) and continued full-time enrolment. This bursary is renewable and may be renewed for an additional three years if the recipient meets the terms outlines above. In the event that a student does not meet the requirements for renewal, the bursary will be presented to a student entering their first year of study at Saint Mary's University.

Constance "Teak" McKibbin Memorial Bursary

  • Criteria / Description: Awarded annually to a full-time, undergraduate student who demonstrates financial need, with preference given to students from Atlantic Canada. The bursary will be awarded and renewed based on satisfactory academic achievement (75% out of high school or GPA 1.7 for renewable bursaries) and continued full-time enrolment. Students must be enrolled in full-time study and maintain a course load per year sufficient to complete their undergraduate degree within four years. Preference will be given to students who are the first in their immediate families to attend a post-secondary institution. This award is renewable each year of the recipient's four-year degree at Saint Mary's permitted they meet the terms as outlined above.

  • Criteria / Description: Awarded to a first year student who is a graduate of Halifax West High School and enrolled in full-time undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Commerce at Saint Mary's University. The award will be presented to a student with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student who shows commitment to the values of leadership through extracurricular activities or community service, and/or who is currently working full or part-time to help finance their education. If there are no eligible candidates enrolled in the Faculty of Commerce, students enrolled in other faculties may be considered. The bursary will be awarded based on satisfactory academic standing.   • Criteria / Description: Awarded to a female student enrolled at Saint Mary's University of Aboriginal descent who demonstrates financial need. Preference
    will be given to recipients who are single parent students. The award is not renewable; however, it may be awarded to the same student more than once, provided the recipient meets the terms outlined above. Award selection will be determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Office in consultation with the Director, Office Aboriginal and Northern Research, Gorsebrook Research Institute for Atlantic Canada Studies, and for designates of that office.
