TESL 100: An Overview to Teaching ESL/EFL
To meet the growing demand for people who can teach English as a Second or Foreign Language, we at Saint Mary's have designed a training program with two components: classroom study and practical experience.
The TESL 100 is a practical introduction to the techniques, methodologies and instructional resources used to teach English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) to children and adults.
TESL 100 is a pre-requisite for Saint Mary's Diploma in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language. Teachers seeking certification under TESL Canada's National Recognition Standards should inquire about the Diploma program.
The Overview Course is for:
- students who want knowledge and skills in teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language;
- teachers who want the necessary skills to work with linguistically and culturally diverse students in their mainstream or ESL/EFL classes;
- people with an undergraduate degree who want some training in TESL/TEFL before going overseas.
Please note:
Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate their competence in English by submitting one of the following:
a) a minimum 550 TOEFL (213 CBT) and 5.5 on the TWE and 60 on the TSE; iBT 80 overall with a minimum core of 20 in each area
b) a minimum average of 4.875 on the CanTEST (5.0 in writing, reading and listening, 4.5 in speaking)
