Qomuti: Indigenous Student Space

Welcome to Qomuti; a dedicated space for Indigenous students at Saint Mary’s University!

Located in Loyola Academic Room 268, Qomuti (pronounced ho-mo-dee) is a Mi’kmaw word meaning “a place of safe haven.” This space was created through community consultation and is intended to be a welcoming home on campus for Indigenous students to gather, study, share, smudge, and feel rooted in culture and connection.

Who is the space for?

Qomuti is open to all Indigenous students at Saint Mary’s. Whether you need a quiet place to work, a space to relax between classes, or a cultural hub to connect with community, Qomuti is here for you.

What's in the space?

  • Comfortable seating and study areas
  • A small kitchenette with a fridge and microwave
  • Beading and crafting supplies for cultural activities
  • Sewing machine (for in-lounge use only)
  • Lockers (available by request through the Indigenous Student Advisor)
  • A smudge-safe environment with ventilation support

Accessing Qomuti

The lounge is accessible 24/7, including during holidays and university closures. A door code is required for entry – this is provided by the Indigenous Student Advisor. In the event of a code change, Indigenous students will be notified by email.

What's in a name?

The name Qomuti was chosen by Indigenous students through an open, community-led process. It reflects the importance of belonging, safety, and cultural grounding for Indigenous learners navigating university life.
