Course Override Request

Students will find information about the following overrides for Commerce courses:

  • Waitlist Information
  • Closed course overrides
  • Prerequisite overrides
  • Repeating a course
  • Late registration

Academic Advising

Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor before submitting an override request to a department. Academic Advisors can help confirm your remaining degree requirements, review your course plan, and confirm prerequisite requirements. Contact advising at bcomm.advising@smu.ca

Waitlist Information

Waitlist registration is available for all undergraduate courses. Waitlist registration in Self-Service Banner means you can join a waitlist for a full or closed course. Students interested in registering for a closed course should use the waitlist function.

Learn how to use the waitlist function here

If you have questions about the waitlist, please contact the BComm Academic Success & Advising Centre at bcomm.advising@smu.ca

Closed Course Overrides

Closed course overrides are intended for students who require a course for their major or to graduate in the current academic year. Students who request a closed course override should also add their name to the waitlist for the course.

Closed course override requests should meet all of the following criteria:

  • Requested course is full or closed; and
  • Course is a requirement for graduation or major progression/completion in the current academic year; and
  • Failing to register for the course will delay your graduation in the term for which you have requested the override.

Students are advised to consult with an academic advisor to determine a course plan and anticipated graduation date prior to submitting an override request. Students who do not meet the above criteria should add their name to the course waitlist using Self Service Banner

Closed Course Override Forms

Students should submit their form to the appropriate department (i.e., ACCT 2241 would go to Accounting Department):

Prerequisite Overrides

The prerequisites in courses are mandatory. It is only in exceptional situations that the prerequisites are waived. The policy on granting a prerequisite waiver is that the student has to show evidence of strong academic performance in prior courses or have substantial and relevant industry experience in the subject area.

A prerequisite waiver, if granted, applies only to the requested course. It does not apply to all the courses that require this prerequisite. A prerequisite override does not automatically entitle the student to a prerequisite or closed course override.

Prerequisite Override Forms

Students should submit their form to the appropriate department (i.e., ACCT 2241 would go to the Accounting Department):

Late Registration

Late registration requests refer to those students seeking registration after the last day to add a course. Students should review the Important Academic Dates website for information on the add and drop dates.

Bachelor of Commerce students who are seeking late registration should contact the BComm Academic Success & Advising Centre at bcomm.advising@smu.ca to discuss potential options. Students should include a list of courses they are seeking late registration for that includes CRNs and Instructor names as well as an explanation as to why they need to register for a course after the deadline. Students in the Faculty of Arts or Science should contact their home advising office for more information.

Students who are requesting to add a course after the last day to add a course has passed should also complete the Add or Drop Courses Form and submit it to their Advising Office. The deadline to submit a late registration is the same as the last day to drop a course.

Note students who have a financial hold and are unable to drop a course can complete the Add or Drop Courses Form and submit it to the Advising Office.

Repeating a Course

Students who want to repeat an undergraduate course offered by the Sobey School of Business and have a final grade of a C- or higher in their first attempt in the course, must submit an override request to the BComm Academic Success and Advising Centre at bcom.advising@smu.ca.

Requests should contain the following information: First name, last name, A-number, course code and CRN, and reason for repeating the course.
