SMUfit

Hello,

I would like to reach out to you, our valued SMUfit Members, to touch base with an update on some membership and operational updates.

Membership Updates

Membership Extensions

Starting this week, our staff have begun the task of extending individuals memberships. Membership extensions were determined by calculating the number of days between when SMUfit closed (March 17, 2020), and when your membership expired.

The days that memberships will be extended from will be as of September 21, 2020, when SMUfit reopened.

If you have a membership currently on hold until December 31st, your membership will become active again on Monday, January 4th.

Membership Holds

It is understandable that many felt uneasy with returning to a gym environment, even with the safety regulations and protocols we have enacted at SMUfit. From the time that we reopened, we have offered our members a no fee membership hold until December 31, 2020.

We will not be offering membership holds past December 31st at this time.

Membership Refunds

Again, it is understandable that many felt uneasy with the returning to a gym environment or, do not wish to return to SMUfit under the current operating parameters in place. If you wish, we will grant members a refund.

Members who paid in full will be refunded for the prorated remainder of their membership.

If you wish to request a refund, you may do so by contacting info.athletics@smu.ca.

Membership refunds will only be considered until November 30, 2020.

After November 30th, membership refunds will be applied as per normal membership regulations, as outlined in the membership handbook. More info can be found at; https://smu.ca/campus-life/smufit-notices.html

Homburg Centre Squash Courts Reopening on Thursday, October 15, 2020

Saint Mary’s University recognizes the important role that physical activity plays in our health & well-being. We have successfully reopened our doors and welcomed many of our students and community members back to SMUfit. Our team is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for students, community members, staff and the greater SMU community.

We are announcing today that we will be re-opening our squash courts for activity beginning Thursday, October 15th. For the time being, access to these courts will be restricted to those members who have ‘SMUfit Plus’ memberships for booking a court time. Court bookings will begin on Tuesday, October 13th.

Additional details, along with an FAQ section, on our re-opening of SMUfit facilities can be found below, on this page.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to our business operations. Our plans will involve different areas of our operations coming back ‘online’ at different times. These plans are still continuing to evolve, and will most certainly change over the coming months, as we adapt to different variables faced in this ‘new normal’.

We would like to take the time to specifically thank Leah Boody and Phil Jourdeuil for their assistance in developing the return to squash activity framework, which have been guided by the Squash Canada and Squash Nova Scotia ‘Return to Activity Plans’. The SMU squash community is important part of the fabric of our overall SMU community, and I look forward to working with them to better the overall squash experience at SMUfit.

We want to thank our members for their support, and ask for your continued patience as we work forward together.

While it may not be business as usual, we look forward to having our squash community get back to activity at the Homburg Centre.

Safety and Cleaning:

Safety

Saint Mary's University's athletic facilites, including the Homburg and Dauphinee centres, underwent significant cleaning before reopening to the public.  In addition, SMU's Athletics and Recreation Department and SMUfit staff have completed mandatory return-to-work orientation and training sessions prior to reopening.

Below are some of the additional steps we have taken to ensure eveyone's safety upon reopening.

  • Ventilation - we are keeping up-to-date with institutional regulatory bodies (APPA, CUABO, etc)., to ensure our ventilation and air handling systems are up-to-date with regulatory bodies as it relates to COVID-19. We will continue to monitor information as it comes out regarding these systems, and intend to keep up with industry best practice with these units, as it relates to COVID-19.
  • Protective Barriers: Plexiglass shields have been installed at our front desk to provide an additional level of protection between staff and members entering/leaving the facility. We will have one staff member behind the desk throughout operating hours.
  • Mask Requirements - A face mask or covering is required in order to access SMU facilities.  Members may remove their mask when they reach their intended workout space.  Masks must be worn (covering mouth and nose) at all times when  moving to different areas throughout the facilities.  Members are encouraged to speak with a member of our team should they have any questions or concerns related to face masks or coverings.
  • Equipment - Available equipment & machines in the Weight Room, Cardio Rooms, and Spin Rooms have been spaced to ensure members are at least 2 metres (6 feet) apart while working out.
  • Hand Sanitizer/Washing - Hand sanitizer stations will continue to be available through the facility, and at the entrances of the exercise areas.  We ask that you consider sanitizing your hands upon entry into these spaces. In addition to the hand sanitizer stations, a portable hand wash station has been added to the front lobby of the building to allow members to wash their hands prior to entering the exiting the building.

Cleaning

We have adopted a multi-layered cleaning protocol in addressing the cleaning/sanitation of our faciltiy.  We have placed additional staff resources in the exercise areas to assist in maintaining sanitary standards, and assisting members maintain a safe and healthy environment.

A 30-minute cleaning transition period is completed after each exercise period.  The cleaning period provides our staff with the necessary time to santitize workout spaces.  In addition, workout spaces will undergo a deep clean at the end of each night to ensure the space is properly sanitized ahead of the next day of operations.

To assist in keeping our spaces sanitized, we have invested in products that will assist our staff in keeping our exercise areas clean and sanitary - we will be using Victory Electrostatic Sprayer's in unison with the cleaning product - Air X-75. Centainly Sanitizing Wipes/Steir Wipes will be avaialbe for members to use.

Victory's Electrostatic Sprayer provides an electrical charge to the Air X 75 cleaning solution, creating a sanitary mist/fog of the cleaning solution, allowing it to wrap around conductive surfaces with an effective and even coverage.

Air X 75 is a wide spectrum virucide, which amongst killing other viruses, kills COVID-19 in 2 minutes.

All products that both staff and members will have available to them are listed on the Government of Canada's list of disinfectants with evidence for use against COVID-19.

Do Your Part

For the health & safety of everyone, all members are expected to comply with SMUfit's code of conduct.  Non-compliance may result in a verbal warning, temporary suspension or membership ban.

Screening - Members are required to answer a pre-screening questionnaire for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to entering the facilities.  Members who are sick or feeling ill, please consider others and stay home.  Please answer these questions truthfully.  Together, we can keep each other safe.

Masks - As per Public Health and University guidelines face masks must be worn while in common spaces on campus.  Please follow the guidelines below for when/where a mask needs to be worn;

  • While walking through the building to your workout area - you must have a mask on at all times.
  • When in exercise areas you may take your mask off once you have reached your exercise area of choice, as long as physical distancing of 6 feet can be ensured.  If physical distancing cannot be ensured, please wear a mask (i.e. spotting someone lifting weights).
  • Staff will be required to wear face masks while on shift, and in public spaces. If in their work spaces masks will not be required, as long as physical distancing can be assured.
