Forensic Sciences

Admission

There are three streams of students who may apply to the Forensic Sciences Diploma Program:

1) undergraduate students enrolled at a recognized university who already are at or wish to transfer to Saint Mary's University to do this program while concurrently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Science, Arts, or Commerce,

2) students who already hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized university, and

3) mature students (e.g. members of the RCMP, police officers, people working in forensic crime labs, etc.).

Stream One

Students following stream one (concurrently pursuing an undergraduate degree):

  • need to be admitted to a degree program at Saint Mary's University,
  • have completed thirty (30) credit hours with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0, and
  • have declared a major.

Those admitted to this Diploma program from this stream are regarded as being in a dual academic program and are required, therefore, to follow the rules and regulations stipulated for this status (Reference Academic Regulation 24).

Stream Two

Students following stream two (already having an undergraduate degree and pursuing only the diploma):

  • may be eligible for admission to the diploma program alone provided they have a minimum GPA of 3.0 from their home institution, and
  • are admitted to Saint Mary's University.

Students may transfer up to half the required credit hours (30) from their previous degree, provided the courses are equivalent to courses applicable to the diploma (Reference Academic Regulation 20).

Stream Three

Students following stream three (mature students with work-related experience in forensic science):

  • do not need to have a degree, and
  • can pursue the Diploma program alone.

How To Apply

All people following stream one must apply to the Forensic Sciences Program Coordinator by January 15th.

All people following stream two or three must apply to Admissions at Saint Mary's University by January 15th.

The application should include a brief statement describing reasons for choosing the program and any work-related experience or goals, as well as academic transcripts. Students from streams two and three will need to complete Form C. If admitted to the Diploma of Forensic Sciences Program, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be maintained to graduate from this program.
