Spring 2021 Graduation

A Message to Spring 2021 Potential Graduates

Spring Convocation will be virtual for the Class of 2021 and will be live-streamed on the Saint Mary’s University website and Facebook page on May 28, 2021 in three ceremonies.

A virtual Convocation in May ensures the university’s continued adherence to public health requirements. While we are disappointed not to be in person and on campus, we know that the livestream of Convocation reaches graduates, families and friends both locally and around the world.

“I am very proud of the graduates of May 2021”, says Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray, President of Saint Mary’s. “In announcing a virtual Convocation for May, we are also acknowledging the resilience and continued commitment of all our graduates. We know from our earlier experience with virtual convocations that the ceremonies will be warm, vibrant and celebratory. We will do our very best to highlight your significant accomplishments as you complete your academic programs.”

Saint Mary’s is excited to recognize our graduates and their achievements and we look forward to sharing in this special celebration on May 28 with the following virtual ceremonies:

10 a.m.                 Sobey School of Business and Graduate Studies in Business
2 p.m.                   Faculty of Science and Graduate Studies in Science
4 p.m.                   Faculty of Arts and Graduate Studies in Arts

All times are listed in Atlantic Daylight Time (ADT).

Convocation is a joyous event, bound by tradition and history.  The University is looking forward to marking this special occasion with you on May 28!

Please contact the University Bookstore for more information on parchment frames, rings, and other memorabilia.

Academic Regalia

Due to Nova Scotian Public Health directives and the safety of our entire campus community we are not permitted to rent gowns during COVID-19.

We are excited to announce that our academic regalia vendor, Harcourts Ltd., in Toronto has put together a special package for potential grads to purchase gowns, hoods, and caps (graduate programs only).

To place an order with our supplier, please visit the Harcourts website.

While convocation will be virtual, you will still get your moment in the spotlight during the convocation video when your name, photo, and hometown appear on screen.  Please submit a photo by April 25, 2021 to ensure it will be included in your convocation event.  If you have not received the link for the photo submission form, please contact graduation@smu.ca.

We will display one photo per graduate during the ceremony. Any graduates who do not submit a photo will simply see their name and hometown appear in the video.  You are not required to submit an official graduation photo.

Graduation photos may be taken at any time, even after graduation.  Students may book photo sessions with our preferred company (Calnen Photography) or wait to borrow academic regalia from the university and have photos taken with a photographer of their choice at a later time.
