Dr. Emily Chapman

Dr. Emily Chapman is a Senior Research Project Manager and Adjunct Professor with the Dynamic Environment and Ecosystem Health Research Group at Saint Mary`s University. She has over 20 years of combined international consulting and research experience in the environmental field, including contaminated site assessments, human health/ecological risk assessments, and remediation projects. Dr. Chapman is currently managing a large interdisciplinary research project at SMU working on developing new remediation options for wetlands severely impacted by legacy gold mine tailings together with industry and academic partners. She is supervising PhD, MSc, and BSc student projects on related topics.

Dr. Karen Harper

Photo of Karen Harper.Karen Harper is an adjunct professor in the Biology Department and in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. She also teaches in the Department of Environmental Science and in the Applied Science program. Her research in plant ecology focuses on vegetation structure at forest edges, which relates to conservation, forest management and climate change. She has led interdisciplinary collaborative research projects on the forest tundra ecotone (treeline) in Canada and forested wetlands in Atlantic Canada. One of her current projects is a global synthesis of studies on forest edges.

Dr. Patricia Matsumoto

Photo of Dr. Patricia MatsumotoDr. Patricia Matsumoto is an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and a Research Associate at the Wicked Problems Lab at Saint Mary’s University. She earned her Ph.D. in Geography in 2019 from São Paulo State University, where she had previously completed her Master’s degree in 2014 and graduated with great distinction in 2012. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Geomatics and Health Geography at the Adolfo Lutz Institute, São Paulo, Brazil. Her research focuses on Health Geography and applies spatial analysis to address complex environmental, public health, and social challenges. Her scientific interests include health geography, spatial analysis, cartography, geographic information systems, remote sensing, forests, public health, and surveillance. She has served as an Academic Editor and reviewer for several scientific journals.
