Centre of Excellence in Accounting and Reporting for Co-operatives

The Centre of Excellence in Accounting and Reporting for Co-operatives (CEARC) was created based on the understanding that the co-operative business model, with its unique business purpose, values and principles, is not adequately served by the same approach to accounting used by investor-driven firms. CEARC grew out of the needs of the Co-operative Management Education program at Saint Mary's University for research and curriculum materials suitable for educating co-operative managers.

Social and Environmental Key Performance Indicators

CEARC received funding from Mitacs to share the cost of developing an interactive web-based platform to contain the social and environmental key performance indicators associated with this project. This will enable CEARC to share the KPIs with co-operatives and will facilitate co-operative users in creating their own reports as well as providing standard reports. Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 15 years. Working with 60 universities, thousands of companies, and both federal a provincial governments, they build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada. Mitacs was founded in 1999 as a Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence, dedicated to supporting applied and industrial research in mathematical sciences and associated disciplines.

Co-operatives for Sustainable Communities: Tools to Measure Co-operative Impact and Performance

The Measuring the Co-operative Difference Research Network (MCDRN) and CEARC joined forces in 2014 to organize an international conference focused on how and why co-operatives assess their performance and their impacts on society. From this conference, researchers developed a book highlighting the latest tools, methodologies, and experiences with measuring and reporting the co-operative difference from around the world.

This free book was published by the Centre of the Study of Co-operatives at the University of Saskatchewan and is now available in electronic and short-order paper copy by visiting the MCDRN research website. Order here.
