Teaching English as a Second Language

TESL Diploma

The TESL/TEFL Diploma program is designed to provide theoretical and practical experience in the field of teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language to adults. It consists of three components:

  1. TESL 100: An Overview to Teaching ESL/EFL
TESL 100 includes forty-five hours of instruction plus a fifteen-hour practicum which is supervised through the practicum journal. To complete the course successfully, students must meet the course requirements, complete the practicum, and attend at least 80 percent of the classes. Practica are arranged individually at the beginning of the course. They take place in the evenings and on weekends. This course may be taken independently. For further details, please refer to the TESL Certificate page.

  2. TESL 201: Methods and Materials
This course is intended for teachers and prospective teachers working with, or preparing to work with, adult learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language. In this course, students acquire a repertoire of techniques to use in teaching ESL/EFL, explore currently available teaching materials and work on creating their own materials. In addition, students are introduced to observation methods, in conjunction with observing ESL classes in the TESL Centre's Intensive English Program.  Throughout the course, students work through a series of lessons in a popular grammar text, becoming aware of the system that underlies the language and principles for teaching grammar.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of TESL 100 and recommendation of the TESL 100 instructor.

  3. TESL 202: Programs and Learners

This course is intended for teachers and prospective teachers working with, or preparing to work with, adult learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language. In this course, students explore various aspects of classroom interaction, testing, and language acquisition, and learn how to plan lessons that maximize learning.  Students also focus on characteristics of learners and of different teaching situations, investigating how these factors influence teaching.  As in TESL 201, students work through a series of lessons in a popular grammar text to increase their knowledge and competency in this area.  A key component of the course is the completion of a 10-hour ESL teaching practicum in the TESL Centre's Intensive English Program.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of TESL 201.
