TESL Diploma

The TESL/TEFL Diploma program is designed to provide theoretical and practical experience in the field of teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language to adults. It consists of three components:

  1. TESL 100: An Overview to Teaching ESL/EFL
TESL 100 includes forty-five hours of instruction plus a fifteen-hour practicum which is supervised through the practicum journal. To complete the course successfully, students must meet the course requirements, complete the practicum, and attend at least 80 percent of the classes. Practica are arranged individually at the beginning of the course. They take place in the evenings and on weekends. This course may be taken independently. For further details, please refer to the TESL Certificate page.

  2. TESL 101: Programs and Learners
This course is intended for teachers and prospective teachers working with, or preparing to work with, adult learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language. In this course, students focus on characteristics of learners and of different teaching situations, investigating how these factors influence teaching. Issues in testing and principles of language acquisition are covered. In addition, students explore some aspects of classroom interaction and are introduced to observation methods, in conjunction with observing ESL classes in the TESL Centre's Intensive English Program.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of TESL 100.

  3. TESL 102: Methods and Materials
This course is intended for teachers and prospective teachers working with, or preparing to work with, adult learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language. In this course, students learn to plan lessons that maximize learning, acquire a repertoire of techniques to use in planning lessons, explore currently available teaching materials and work on creating their own materials. Students also work through a series of lessons in a popular grammar text, becoming aware of the system that underlies the language and principles for teaching grammar.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of TESL 100.
