The Language Centre

Saint Mary's University is pleased to announce that we will provide students with a complete and vibrant on-campus experience with in-person classes in the fall.

The university's residencesdiningathletics & recreation and library facilities (and more) will be open and ready to serve our growing community. This September, there will be some changes in how we gather together, use our space and schedule classes so that everyone can feel comfortable and confident being on campus. Our operational plans follow both federal and provincial public health advice, and the university will continue to rely on the strong adoption of public health directives by members of our community.

The Language Centre aims to deliver all Fall 1 and Fall 2 classes in-person. For those students who are not yet able to join in-person classes, we will work together to develop a hybrid-virtual learning model to meet student needs.

General ESL Courses

Our general ESL classes from levels Starter (A1 CEFR) to level 3000 (B1 CEFR) use Oxford’s American English File with online practice and assessment. Our higher-level general ESL classes EPPC level 4000 (B1/B1+ CEFR) to EPPC level 5500 (level B2/B2+) use Cambridge Empower with online practice and assessment.  Both textbooks come in e-book format as well as paperback depending on the classroom mode of delivery. Each textbook has its own LMS that provides a blended learning component to the levels.

The textbooks come in e-book format as well as paperback depending on the classroom mode of delivery. The textbook provides a blended learning component to the levels.

It is important to note that mandatory travel and quarantine protocols for international passengers entering Canada are being continually updated. All students must understand and follow these requirements when arranging travel to Canada. Please review the COVID-19 restriction updates on the Government of Canada website, the Government of Nova Scotia website, as well as the Travel and Quarantine Information page on the Saint Mary’s University website.

As always, we look forward to welcoming students to The Language Centre and we will remain engaged and adaptive as students begin their transition back to the classroom.
