Spend the month of July learning English in glorious Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada! With its inviting summer weather and English-speaking environment, Canada's Ocean Playground is the perfect place to learn about Anglophone Canadian culture while improving your English skills. Or, if you prefer a Winter Wonderland, study English with us during the crisp, refreshing month of January!

Whichever season you prefer, you can improve your English skills at Saint Mary's University while you participate in cultural and recreational activities in the beautiful city of Halifax. With four distinct seasons and a temperate climate, this medium-sized Canadian city on the Atlantic Ocean offers an exceptionally clean, safe living environment only 2 hours by air from Toronto or New York. The university campus is just a five-minute walk from a natural forest park jutting into the ocean or a twenty-minute walk from downtown restaurants, theatres and shopping.

As part of your program take part in visits to museums, historic sites and art galleries, shopping expeditions, concerts, theatre presentations, and outings to local businesses, schools and other parts of the province. Cultural and sightseeing activities will depend on the season and may include:

  • The Nova Scotia International Tattoo

  • Atlantic Jazz Festival

  • Craft fairs

  • Halifax Harbour cruises and tours

  • Whale watching and deep-sea fishing

  • Shakespeare by the Sea

  • Day trips to local towns and fishing villages

  • Nature hikes

  • Symphony concerts

  • Observatory and planetarium visits

  • Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

  • World-renowned Neptune Theatre

  • Skiing, tobogganing, ice skating and sleigh rides

  • Professional hockey games and other sporting events

  • Shopping Tours and Farmer's Market

  • Intramural sports

This short, intensive course is suitable for individuals or groups from a variety of backgrounds:

  • Those above the age of 16 who would like to improve their English communication skills for work, travel, study or personal interest

  • Undergraduate and graduate students who want to know more about Canada

  • Professionals who want to improve their general English skills

  • Immigrants or Francophone Canadians

(Note: The average age of students enrolled in this program is 21-22 years of age.)

During the program students will participate in a variety of different classroom activities depending on the elective courses they select:

  • Discussing current events

  • Reading a variety of materials: general interest, academic, professional

  • Listening to audiotape, videotapes and guest speakers

  • Practicing slang and idioms

  • Meeting Canadians

  • Giving oral presentations

  • Practicing various types of essay and report writing

  • Learning and practicing new vocabulary

  • Improving their pronunciation and grammar

  • Experiencing Canadian culture

  • Participating in organized excursions.

The One Month Immersion Program focuses on helping students develop stronger listening and speaking skills and practice oral communication, although there is also some assistance in improving reading, writing and use of English grammar. The main focus of this course is on general English and cross-cultural communication skills. Students who wish to improve their English for academic reasons should register for the English for Academic Purposes program. Please note that this is not a Business English course.

During the One Month Immersion program, students study English in class for twenty-five hours per week. In the evenings and on the weekends they enjoy a variety of social and cultural activities with other Intensive English Program students.
