2018-2019 IMPACT Program - Research Associates

Research Associates are typically in their first year of the IMPACT Program, and are responsible for developing the Economic Forecast and supporting their assigned Fund Manager in performing sector and security analyses. They assume Fund Manager responsibilities in their second year on the IMPACT program.


2018-19

Andrew Jones

Andrew is from Halifax; however, he spent a majority in his life in Texas and Southern-Ontario. Andrew is a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student pursuing a major in Accounting. At the
IMPACT Fund, Andrew is responsible for the REITs sector. Growing up, Andrew developed a passion for investing from techniques passed down to him from his father, incorporating such techniques into his own portfolio. Andrew has secured a work term with the CRA and plans to pursue a CPA designation upon graduation. Ultimately, Andrew plans on becoming a
consultant to major firms in North America.

Nevin Becker

Nevin is from Sackville, New Brunswick and is a third year commerce student pursuing an honours in economics with a major in finance. In his first two years at Saint Mary’s University he played on the Huskies Football team while achieving academic All-Canadian awards in both years. This past summer, Nevin owned and operated an $80,000 painting business in Moncton, NB. As a Research Associate, he is responsible for assisting his Fund Manager in the Financials sector. Upon graduation, Nevin plans on achieving his CFA designation and aspires a career in investment or corporate banking.

Adam Bateman

Adam is from Caledon, Ontario. He is in his third year of pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Finance. While making the Dean’s List every year, Adam has also developed a strong interest in portfolio management. In his first year with the IMPACT Investment Fund, Adam brings value to the fund by filling a Research Associate position in the Materials Sector. He is also a two-time Academic All Canadian playing for the Saint Mary’s Varsity Men’s Ice Hockey team. Upon graduation, Adam plans to earn his CFA designation.

Shafkat Reza

Shafkat Reza is from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and is a fourth year student finishing up his Bachelor of Commerce degree with an honours in Economics and a major in Finance. As a Research Associate, Shafkat is responsible for the Energy Sector. He is also very interested in Big Data and Corporate Finance, and in the future Shafkat hopes to learn how to merge the two fields together. After graduation, Shafkat wants to focus on value-based investing, and eventually he plans to set up his own fund.

Ashley LeBlanc

Ashley is a third year Finance Major who is from Nova Scotia. Her responsibility as a Research Associate is in the Consumer Discretionary and Staples sectors. Growing up with top
performing parents in the banking industry sparked Ashley’s interests in business from a young age. She is a high achiever, earning her position on the dean’s list each year through
determination and dedication. Ashley’s leadership skills became evident early on through sports and made her stand out in jobs by receiving quick promotions. The knowledge and real life
experiences she acquires from achieving her degree and in the IMPACT program will be applied to help her accomplish her goal of becoming a portfolio manager.

Ryland Conrad

Ryland is from Halifax, Nova Scotia and is a third year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Finance. As a Research Associate at the IMPACT Fund, he is responsible for the Energy sector. During his studies at Saint Mary’s, Ryland has been placed on the Dean’s List for two consecutive years and has  been awarded several scholarships based on academic  excellence and his passion for finance. Additionally, Ryland is enrolled in the Cooperative Education program and has spent his most recent summer working at Emergency Medical Care as a Financial Analyst. Upon graduation, Ryland plans to obtain his CFA designation and pursue a career in equity research.

Mitchell Caiger

Mitchell Caiger, from Halifax, Nova Scotia is a third year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Finance. In recognition of his academic achievement Mitchell has been placed on the Dean’s List each year of study and has been awarded multiple scholarships. As a Research Associate, Mitchell is responsible for the Industrials Sector. Outside of the classroom Mitchell is an avid golfer and spent his most recent summer working as an intern with the Nova Scotia Golf Association coordinating provincial championships. Mitchell has also been involved with the Conflict Resolution Society at Saint Mary’s University where he delivered conflict resolution and
peace education workshops to elementary school students in Halifax and Belfast, Northern Ireland. Upon graduation Mitchell plans to earn his CFA charter and pursue a career in investment banking or asset management.

Tahsin Fatin

Tahsin grew up in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and he is a third year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Finance. He is a member of the prestigious Beta Gamma Sigma honor society, which is awarded only to the top 10% of the students, and has also been placed on the Dean’s List. Tahsin completed his first co-op work term as an assistant accounts manager in a procurement services company that deals in the energy sector. He has also done an internship with an export oriented pharmaceuticals company. As a research associate in the IMPACT Fund, Tahsin is responsible for the Technology sector. Upon graduation he plans to pursue his CFA designation and a career on Bay Street.
