2016-2017 IMPACT Program - Fund Managers

Fund Managers are the main fiduciaries of the fund and are responsible for making all decisions with regards to asset allocation, sector allocation, and security selection. Each Fund Manager is assigned to specific industry sectors and receives valuable assistance from at least one Research Associate.


Alex Fowler

Alex is a fourth year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in finance and is a 2017 Level I Candidate in the CFA Program from Moncton, New Brunswick.  As a Fund Manager, Alex oversees the Materials and Consumer Staples sectors of the IMPACT portfolio.  He has been awarded multiple scholarships on the basis of academic excellence, including the Santamarian Scholarship and the CFA Program University Student Scholarship.  Alex has also had the opportunity to participate in the CFA Institute Research Challenge during his time with the IMPACT Program.  Following graduation, Alex plans to pursue a career in wealth management while continuing to work towards a CFA designation.

Jorge González

Jorge is originally from Caracas, Venezuela, and is a fourth year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in both Accounting and Finance. As a Fund Manager, he is responsible for the Energy sector of the IMPACT portfolio. Over his five years in Canada, Jorge has been awarded with more than 10 different scholarships and bursaries, including the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies. Outside of the IMPACT Fund, Jorge has been tutoring SMU students for over 2 years at the Math Help Centre and independently, and has helped a local company to expand its business exposure in Latin America through English-Spanish Translation services. Following graduation, Jorge will complete a four-month internship in sales & trading with CIBC in Toronto, while continuing to work towards a CFA designation.

Mengqing Chen

Mengqing is a fourth-year student with a Finance major and French minor at Saint Mary’s University. Coming from China in 2013, she has been the recipient for Killam Properties Inc. Scholarship, Gertrude Pitcher Bursary, Chrysler Can. Scholarship and IMPACT Fund Award. Joining the IMPACT Fund in 2015 as a Research Associate, Mengqing is currently the Fund Manager of Consumer Discretionary and Financial Sector. She has been volunteering with various community events and serves as the President of Saint Mary’s University Chinese Student Association. Passes the Level I of the CFA Program, Mengqing plans to pursue a career in the Capital Markets after graduation in May.

Mitchell Norrie

Mitchell is a fourth year Bachelor of Commerce student from Calgary majoring in Finance. During his time at Saint Mary’s University, Mitchell has maintained his position on the Dean’s List and is currently a Fund Manager for the IMPACT Investment Fund. In this role, he oversees the Financial and Real Estate sector while mentoring three Research Associates in this area. Aside from the IMPACT Fund, he is currently the Financial Director of the Commerce Society where he manages the finances of the society, produces the budget, projects cash flows, and helps run events. After he completes his degree in May, Mitchell plans on pursuing a career in real estate.



Ashley Adams

Ashley is from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and is currently in her second year of the Sobey Master of Business Administration Program. Ashley graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2012 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (first-class standing) and a Certificate in Accounting. During her time as an undergraduate student, she successfully represented UPEI in a variety of Case Competitions, and was part of the 2011 winning team of the Atlantic Global Research Challenge. Ashley is a recipient of a FGSR Graduate Award for outstanding performance on the GMAT exam as well as the Dr. Richard Homburg MBA Bursary. As a Fund Manager, Ashley is responsible for the Information Technology and Health Care sectors. Following graduation in May 2017, Ashley plans to utilize the experience and knowledge acquired through her studies and the IMPACT Program to pursue a career in portfolio management.



Stephanie Fitzner

Stephanie Fitzner is a third-year student at Saint Mary’s University pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree with majors in Finance and Economics. Her academic success has earned her the Presidential Scholarship at SMU and a place on the Dean’s List. Stephanie is a Fund Manager for the IMPACT Fund’s Telecommunications and Industrials sector. She is currently in Toronto, completing a four-month internship in Corporate Banking at Scotiabank.

Outside of the IMPACT fund, she acts as an Associate for Venture Grade, the first student-raised venture capital fund in Canada. Stephanie also sits on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia and gives voice to JA Alumni and current participants.
