2016-2017 IMPACT Program - Research Associates

Research Associates are typically in their first year of the IMPACT Program, and are responsible for developing the Economic Forecast and supporting their assigned Fund Manager in performing sector and security analyses. They assume Fund Manager responsibilities in their second year on the IMPACT program.

Amaan Popatiya

Amaan is a third year Bachelor of Commerce student pursuing a double major in Finance and Accounting. At the IMPACT Fund, Amaan is responsible for the Energy Sector. During his time at the Fund, he has also had the opportunity to compete in the Rotman International Trading Competition. Amaan has been placed on the Dean’s List for two consecutive years now and has been awarded several academic excellence based scholarships. Currently, he is working for the university’s Economics department as a Teaching Assistant and as a Fundraiser for the university’s Alumni and Development department. Upon graduation, he plans to pursue a CFA as well as a CPA designation, and wishes to specialize in Mergers & Acquisitions finance.

Avneesh Hingorani

Avneesh is originally from Mumbai, India but resides in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and works full time as an Industrial Engineer for the past 7 years. He is currently a part-time student in his second year of the Sobey Master of Business Administration Program and is expected to graduate by May 2018. Avneesh graduated with distinction from Concordia University, Montreal in 2008 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering and was on the Concordia University's Dean's List. As a Research Associate, he is responsible for assisting his Fund Manager in the Material sector. Avneesh plans to expand his knowledge about the finance industry through the IMPACT Fund program.

Clara Budag

Clara is the daughter of entrepreneurs, and originally from Santa Catarina, Brazil. She is a third year student of Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Economics and Finance. In her spare time, Clara volunteers as an adviser for the Company Program at Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia (2016/2017). Additionally, Clara is pursuing a dream of opening her own business in esthetics. As a Research Associate, she is responsible for assisting her FM in the Materials Sector. Upon graduating, Clara plans to continue running her business, as well as achieve her CFA designation.

Esraa Habboush

Esraa is a third year B.Comm student with a double major in finance and economics. As a research associate, she is currently responsible for the Energy sector. Esraa has interned as a financial analyst for a major company in the Middle East that owned several globally known restaurants. She has volunteered several times in high schools as a teacher's assistant and in hospitals all the while maintaining an excellent performance that she’s been awarded for, including a full scholarship to SMU. Esraa plans on getting her MBA and CFA designation upon graduation and aspires to become a financial analyst or an investment banker to acquire the knowledge needed to start up her own company one day.

Yifan Ni

Yifan (Grace) Ni is from Shanghai, China, and is a third year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Accounting and Finance. As a Research Associate, Yifan is responsible for assisting her FM in the Telecommunications and Industrials industry. Yifan is also a tutor at the Math Help Centre, helping SMU students with Math, Accounting and Finance courses. Upon graduation, Yifan plans on pursuing both CPA and CFA designations.

Jarrett Leach

Jarrett is from Amherst, Nova Scotia, and is a third year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Finance. As a Research Associate, he is responsible for assisting his FMs in the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors.  This summer Jarrett plans to write the Canadian Securities Course, and upon graduation, Jarrett plans to pursue his CFA designation. Ultimately, Jarrett plans to pursue a career in either private equity or wealth management.

Jordan Logan

Jordan is a 5th year student studying Accounting, Finance, and Chemistry at Saint Mary's; and is responsible for research in the discretionary and financial sectors. His interests include algorithmic trading, investment banking, corporate finance, and portfolio management. After graduation Jordan plans to pursue a CFA charter.

Nick Briggs

Nick is a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Finance at Saint Mary's University. He currently acts as a Research Associate for the IMPACT Fund operating in the information technology and healthcare sectors. He has strong interests in technology, emerging markets, and crypto-currency. Nick was granted the opportunity to represent Saint Mary's at the Rotman International Trading Competition 2017, where he competed in a variety of simulated market trading platforms. He looks forward to achieving an MBA and completing his CFA designation in the future, in order to achieve his goals of becoming a CEO for a technology start-up."

Parker Bell

Parker is from Halifax, Nova Scotia and is a first year MBA student at the Sobey School of Business. As a Research Associate, he is responsible for covering the energy sector for the IMPACT Fund. After completing his Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance, he continued his career with The Citco Group of Companies in a hedge fund operations role. While pursuing his MBA, Parker has been a recipient of the Faculty of Graduate Studies & Research Award based on academic achievement, and sits on the MBA Society Executive as VP Finance. Upon graduating in January 2018, Parker would like to pursue a career in corporate or investment banking.

Patrick O'Brien

Patrick O’Brien is a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student from Nova Scotia with a major in Finance & Economics. Patrick is a Research Associate for the IMPACT Fund’s Materials sector, with an interest in derivatives and proprietary trading. He also competes in the annual TMX options competition, hosted by the Montreal exchange, and competed in the 2017 Rotman International Trading Competition. Upon Graduation Patrick plans to achieve a CFA designation.

Tyler Burns

Tyler is from Halifax, but has lived in Charlottetown, Moncton, and Toronto. He is a third year Finance Major, and is responsible for the Financials and Real Estate Investment Trusts sector of the investment fund. While attending the all-boys school Upper Canada College in Toronto’s core, Tyler was exposed to Bay Street at 14, and developed a passion for the fast-paced environment. Last summer, he worked for RBC’s UK Capital Markets in an accounting role, and was able to experience Brexit unfold firsthand. Banking is in Tyler’s blood, as he comes from a family with a long history of producing bankers. It was only natural for him to gravitate towards his father’s footsteps. Upon graduation, Tyler aspires to gain knowledge in Investment Banking, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Venture Capitalist.

Usmaan Ali

Usmaan is a third-year undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Commerce program at Saint Mary’s University. He is responsible for coverage of the REITs and Financials sectors. Usman’s interests include quantitative trading techniques, computer programming, financial analysis, and website development. Upon graduation, he hopes to gain relevant work experience and pursue a Master’s Degree.

Will Robbins

Will is a fourth year B.Comm. student majoring in finance and economics from Halifax. As a Research Associate, he supports his Fund Manager in the telecommunications and industrial products sectors. He spent his previous summer at ScotiaBank in their Dealer Finance Centre where he was responsible for the validation and funding of loan applications. He also co-founded the Enactus project, Stock Up, which taught financial literacy and the basics of investing to students of all years. Upon graduation, Will plans to pursue his JD while focusing on international trade and investment law in emerging markets.
