00:04.28
Hi there,
My name is Bill Travis and I'm one of the
00:07.13
accessibility advisors here at the
Fred Smithers Centre for Student Accessibility at Saint Mary’s University.
00:14.04
Today I'd like to show you a little bit about some of the assistive technology
00:19.57
tools that are available to you as a student at Saint Mary's free of charge.
00:24.96
You have access to Microsoft Word through your
00:29.47
student e-mail,
through your Outlook subscription.
00:33.70
So, what I would like to do is share my screen with you
so we could look at that together.
00:40.14
This is my login screen.
I just logged into my e-mail online.
00:44.19
I went to office.com, typed in
00:47.03
student e-mail address and my password, and this is my login screen.
00:51.43
From here I have an app launcher that allows me to choose any of Microsoft's
00:56.34
apps and use them for free.
That would be Outlook to check my e-mail,
01:00.80
PowerPoint if I want to make a presentation,
01:03.67
Teams if I want to go on a Teams call, or Microsoft Word if I want to create a
01:08.71
document.
01:13.92
So, the two features I want to show you in Microsoft Word,
01:17.94
first of all are the dictation tools
and the other one will be under view the
01:23.57
the immersive reader. But first,
Let’s get some text here by dictating.
01:36.42
This is just an example to show you how well
Microsoft Word can type for you now.
01:44.89
This allows you to get your ideas out of your head
before you forget what you wanted to say,
01:50.78
Especially if you're a person with ADHD
01:54.94
and your brain changes tapes from time to time.
02:03.93
Students with learning disabilities that can affect their ability to spell a word
02:09.45
as quickly as others would also benefit from this technology because it allows
02:14.77
them to turn that part of their brain off and just get their ideas down.
02:25.24
So that demonstrates that. But
02:27.99
to take this text and have it read,
for example, if you have a reading in
02:32.54
bright space,
you can copy and paste the text into a
02:35.85
Word file and use this immersive reader tool to read it aloud to you.
02:43.34
The immersive readers customizable in terms of the background colour,
02:47.53
the text size,
02:49.99
the spacing between words,
but also what I really like is this line
02:54.97
focusing. Choose 5 lines, 3 lines or one line.
02:58.41
I'll just show you the three line version for now. And as you're reading it,
03:04.05
it's almost like a karaoke ball. It
03:07.47
highlights the word that it's reading
03:10.42
so you can see it and hear it at the same time.
03:12.84
This is just an example to show you how well Microsoft Word can type for you now.
03:17.96
This allows you to get your ideas out of your head before you forget what you
03:21.68
wanted to say,
especially if you're a person with ADHD
03:24.30
and your brain changes tapes from time to time.
03:27.58
Students with learning disabilities that can affect their ability to spell a word
as quickly as others would also benefit from this technology because it allows
03:34.87
them to turn that part of their brain off and just get their ideas down.
03:39.96
As you can see,
a couple of pretty helpful tools.
03:43.18
Thank you for watching this video. And if you're interested,
