00:00.00
Hi, I'm Maddy.
I am a registered student at the Fred Smithers Centre.
00:04.00
and I am also a part-time employee there.
00:06.00
and today I'm going to be teaching you
00:08.00
how to use Kurzweil 3000 text-to-speech.
00:11.00
Kurzweil 3000 is an assistive tech software
00:15.00
that can basically be used to read documents aloud
00:18.00
but it can also help you with writing
00:21.00
you can make notes directly on your readings
00:23.00
you can also make audio notes instead of written notes
if a thought just comes to you in the moment
00:27.00
and I'll be showing you how to use all of that
00:30.00
here on a laptop that I've borrowed from the Fred Smithers Centre
that already has the software installed.
00:35.00
So, I'll share my screen with you to get started.
00:38.00
First, what we're going to do is we're going
to launch Kurzweil.
00:42.00
So, the first thing that we'll get started with
00:45.00
is the read function
00:47.00
and we're going to upload a file.
00:49.00
Hit file, open, I know that on my desktop I have this specific PDF.
00:57.00
It's just loading in here now.
00:59.00
It doesn't take very long to do that.
01:02.00
It actually does it a lot quicker than you'd expect,
01:04.00
especially for long documents.
01:06.00
So, we've just got "The Tell-Tale Heart" here
01:10.00
by Edgar Allan Poe. That's kind of just
01:12.00
what we'll be using for a demo.
01:14.00
So now that all of our pages are loaded in,
01:16.00
we'll go to the second page
01:18.00
because that's where things kind of actually get going.
01:22.50
So I'll click at the beginning of the text and then I will
01:25.00
hit this green button in order to start the reading.
01:29.00
"True! Nervous - very, very dreadfully nervous I have been and am,
01:34.00
but why will you say that I am-"
01:38.00
So that's just a little bit of a demo of kind of what it sounds like,
01:41.00
but if you click "Audio Options" there are also several ways
01:44.00
to change the speed, the voice, the reading mode
01:47.00
and yeah, there are a lot of options!
01:50.00
While you're reading you can also use many of the features that are here on the left
01:53.00
including Highlight, Add Text-Notes,
01:56.00
you can look up words in the dictionary,
02:00.00
you can get spellcheck, there are a lot of really helpful tips & tools.
02:04.00
Something else that's really interesting about Kurzweil 3000 is
02:07.00
that you can add voice notes. So if I had
02:09.00
a specific thought that I wanted to add here
02:11.00
I could just click this button, add a voice note
02:13.00
and it will begin recording and I can speak into this here,
02:17.00
leave my little voice note and then click done.
02:20.00
And I'll make sure that after I've done that,
02:23.00
if you use the voice notes,
02:25.00
make sure that you save the document as a Kurzweil document,
02:28.00
because that's the way you'll be able to access those audio files.
02:32.00
Next we will move ahead to the Write feature.
02:36.00
The Write feature doesn't have too too many
02:40.00
elements that are different than the read-aloud portion,
02:42.00
the Write version, however, does give you the option to
02:46.00
make a brainstorm, where you can basically
02:49.00
branch off of a main idea.
02:51.00
This can be really helpful for developing ideas for essays and arguments,
02:55.00
and any kind of assignment that you have
02:58.00
so that you can have it in the same place as all your notes.
03:02.00
And the scan feature is pretty self-explanatory.
03:04.00
You can basically just hook yourself up to a scanner
03:07.00
and through the "Scanner Set-Up"
03:11.00
you can select your specific scanner
03:15.00
and then you can get it to scan a document for you.
03:18.000
If you have a document that was, for example,
03:20.000
handed out to you in class
03:22.000
and you would like to use Kurzweil to make notes on it,
03:24.000
you can scan the document in your printer or your scanner,
03:27.00
and you can upload the file.
03:29.00
It can essentially help turn documents that weren't
03:31.00
easily speech-to-text accessible
03:34.00
then become speech-to-text accessible.
03:37.00
And once again you can continue to use
03:39.00
a series of really useful hacks and treats on the side
03:44.000
to help make your notes more you, more unique and more personalized!
03:51.000
So that's Kurzweil 3000
03:53.000
and if you are interested in this or any of our other assistive tech
03:58.000
you should check out some of our other demo videos on our website!
04:01.000
Thanks!
