Seminar (pizza included!): Feature-Rich Multimedia Authoring Tools and UI
Many novice users struggle with multimedia authoring (MMA) tasks. MMA tools often have extensive feature sets and correspondingly complex user interfaces that impede these users’ creative endeavours. In this seminar, Dr. Akiyama will discuss issues often observed in the design of feature-rich software tools such as MMA tools. Dr. Akiyama will then introduce several common approaches to address the barriers they pose for novice users. Finally, a new approach that Dr. Akiyama has developed to provide support for novice users so they can utilize existing MMA systems more effectively will be presented. Read more here.
It's Engineering Week!!
March 9th to 14th is Engineering Week 2015. We've got some great events lined up:
Tuesday: Pizza Social with PEng's and Co-op students. A great chance to network and grab a free meal! Join us in the Loyola Dining Hall from 6-8 pm.
Thursday: Revenge of the students. Engineering students take on their professors in what promises to be a highly amusing game of basketball. Not to be missed.
Friday: Mid-day design competition. 10 am - 1 pm. Details to be with-held until the event!
Saturday: Engineering bonanza:
- Robot competition: 10 am - 6 pm in the McNally Main Theatre.
- Engineering poster presentations and demonstration of term projects: 3 - 6 pm in the McNally Main Theatre.
- Engineering Banquet: 6 pm - late!
**Tickets, available for only $10 in the Engineering Office, are required!** Semi-formal dress is appropriate.

Seminar: Tutorial on Kernel Machines

Kernel machines have been successfully applied to solve many problems in the area of pattern recognition. The term “kernel machine” refers to a family of machine learning algorithms that can be used for classification, regression, clustering, principle component analysis and adaptive filtering. The kernel function is employed to map the input space to a high dimensional feature space which gives the kernel machine the ability to represent non-linear relationships in the input data.
The purpose of this tutorial is to provide a high-level introduction to some popular kernel machines and to present a road map for practitioners looking to learn more about this exciting and advancing field. Knowledge of a high-level programming language such as Matlab or Python is helpful, but not essential. Examples will be used to illustrate key concepts and suitable references to the existing literature will be given. Individuals working or interested in the area of kernel machines are invited to attend and there will be time for a group discussion after the presentation.
