Mandarin for Beginners

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use the sound system of pinyin.
  • Make greetings in Chinese.
  • Tell your name to others, and ask about others ‘names.
  • Introduce your classmates.
  • Recognize 20 simple Chinese characters.
  • Relevant cultural tips will be provided throughout the course.

Mandarin I

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • understand and use very simple Chinese words and phrases
  • meet basic needs for communication and
  • possess the ability to further your Chinese language studies.
  • Relevant cultural tips will be provided throughout the course.
  • Topics will include but not limited to colors, likes and dislikes, professions, pets, age etc.

Mandarin Ⅱ

In this course, students will learn how to use Chinese to:

  • Buy food and clothes.
  • Ask about time and give an answer.
  • Talk about everyday life.
  • See a doctor.
  • Talk about future plans.
  • Talk about weekend.
  • Talk about languages, locations, nationalities.
  • Relevant cultural tips will be provided throughout the course.

Mandarin III

In this course, students will learn how to use Chinese to:

  • ask for and give directions
  • talk about the courses you are taking
  • compare different things
  • describe a person’s appearance
  • emphasize time, place and means
  • describe the state of actions or things
  • describe how a person is dressed
  • ask about the prices and negotiate with the vendors
  • Relevant cultural tips will be provided throughout the course.

Mandarin IV

In this course, students will learn how to use Chinese to:

  • Talking about one’s life in a new place.
  • Invite somebody to do something and arrange an appointment
  • Describe somebody, something, or an event
  • Stop somebody from doing something and give permission to somebody to do something
  • Remind people to do something
  • Request someone to hurry up politely
  • Express satisfaction and make a complaint about a bad service.
  • Give your opinion or suggestion to someone
  • Make an estimation; predict or guess the result of something
  • Correct someone’s mistake in speech
  • Change a plan or an appointment
  • Make a comparison
  • Give reasons or explain people’s questions
