SMU business school recognized as sustainability thought leader
This month, the Sobey School of Business received the exciting news that they have been selected as a PRME Champion for the 2020-2021 cycle, along with 35 other business schools in 20 different countries. PRME Champions are a group of PRME signatories who have committed to being leaders in the practice of responsible management education. Of the approximately 650 PRME signatories worldwide, the 36 business schools chosen as PRME Champions will be tasked with active engagement on the PRME goals, including advancing the broad scale implementation of sustainability throughout all facets of the participating business schools.
The PRME Champion program began in 2013 with a pilot group and has now run three successful cycles of PRME Champions, who have contributed to developing and promoting sustainability activities through working groups, biannual workshops and publications. The focus of the 2020-2021 cycle will be on thought and action leadership, knowledge sharing and peer-learning with the aim of future-proofing the institutions and demonstrating the impact of their sustainability efforts. Harjeet Bhabra, Dean of the Sobey School of Business, looks forward to the opportunity for the Sobey School to escalate the school’s commitment to responsible management education, stating that “Being selected as PRME Champions complements the Sobey School’s dedication to sustainability. It is encouraging to see how well our strategic vision matches with the principles of the PRME initiative”.
The Sobey School of Business is incredibly proud of the sustainability education initiatives already in place including:
- Integrating service learning into course curriculum
- The extensive PRME library in place for faculty to use
- Annual event to explore a PRME topic. Our first event on responsible investing, held in November, included a research expo, panel discussion and teaching showcase
- Faculty research on issues related to sustainability
As a 2020-2021 PRME Champion, the Sobey School of Business looks forward to increasing the integration of sustainability themes and projects into course curriculum and operations through active engagement as a PRME Champion.
