New Agreement Will Propel Sobey HR Students’ Careers
Date Published: December 17, 2019
Agreement offers window for recent alumni to benefit as well
Sobey School of Business graduates majoring in Human Resources and Industrial Relations will graduate one step closer to achieving the CPHR designation, thanks to an accreditation agreement the School has signed with the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Canada (Nova Scotia).
Saint Mary's University is the first university in Nova Scotia to offer this opportunity.
HR majors meeting specific academic requirements will be able to apply for a waiver of the National Knowledge Exam (NKE), one of the key steps in achieving the Chartered Professional in Human Resources designation.
The agreement also permits graduates from the program from as far back as May 2017 to apply for the waiver, but they must do so by June 15, 2020.
The Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation is a nationally recognized level of achievement in the field of Human Resources. The CPHR represents a commitment to a national standard of excellence and sets a benchmark for the practice of effective Human Resources. It emphasizes the strategic role of HR management in business and plays an important role in securing HR's position as an equal business partner at the executive level.
Students and alumni are encouraged to contact the Sobey Bachelor of Commerce Advising Centre, located off the Sobey building lobby (firstname.lastname@example.org), for more information on the process of applying.
The Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University is committed to the success of our students, and ensuring they embark on their careers with the tools they need to succeed.
How to apply for NKE waiver
Sobey Students and Alumni interested in the CPHR designation will need to:
- Become a member of CPHR Nova Scotia: Join here and pay your fees
- Demonstrate you qualify:
- Contact CPHR NS to advise that you are a Sobey BComm grad with an HR Major
- Request a transcript from SMU and submit it to CPHR to demonstrate you have a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA
