Webinar tackles barriers for Black businesses

Date Published: September 23, 2021

On September 21, the Sobey School Community Revitalization & Prosperity Network hosted the second webinar in its Black Business Series. The webinar was presented in partnership with the Black Business Initiative (BBI), the premier business development organization supporting Black businesses in Nova Scotia.

The theme of the webinar was Access to Capital Markets: Overcoming Barriers for Black Businesses.

The discussion focused on financing as an essential part of operating any business. Without adequate access to financing, the staying power of a business and its potential for growth is jeopardized. Studies show that, all else equal, Black businesses face systemic barriers in accessing capital compared to other groups.

The discussion featured:

  • Alfred Burgesson BA'19, Founder & CEO of Tribe Network
  • Matthew Martel MTEI'18, Chief Operating Officer of the Black Business Initiative
  • Dr. Mohammad Rahaman, Associate Dean of Strategic Partnership & Community Engagement at the Sobey School of Business
  • Craig Wellington, Executive Director of the Black Opportunity Fund

A full recording of the webinar is now available online.
