About Saint Mary's

Good Neighbours Guide

Whether you live near Saint Mary’s or on campus, it is important that, as neighbours, we all make an effort to be friendly and respectful to each other. Here are a few things that you can do to develop good relationships with the people who live around you:

Introduce yourself

Don't be shy—just say hi! Make an effort to meet your neighbours and say "hi" when you meet. Getting to know each other a little bit will go a long way to building a more understanding and respectful relationship.

Keep it down

Remember that our neighbours come from all walks of life, from seniors to students to families with young kids. Like you, they just want quiet, friendly people living next door.

Be conscious of your noise levels. If you are coming home late, avoid yelling and loud laughter in the streets and try to close taxi doors quietly. If you like listening to loud music, try to keep the noise contained to your place, or check with your neighbours to see what times are okay with them.

Enjoy the party

A party can be lots of fun, but it can also lead to issues between you and your neighbours if not handled appropriately. When hosting a party at your place, a little planning can go a long way:

  • Let your neighbours know: Hand out notices to nearby neighbours with the date and time of the party, as well as your contact information. They will be less likely to call the police if they can just call you.
  • Know the rules: Be aware of city by-laws and common fines. Be sure to keep the noise level and your guests under control.
  • Send people safely on their way: Organize phone numbers for taxis, bus schedules and designated drivers for when the party's over.
  • Tidy up: Have plenty of garbage and recycling bags handy for quick clean-ups but remember to put the garbage out only on the day of pick up.

Respect your space

Keep your property free of litter and clutter. Know the garbage and recycling days, and clean up after any pets.

Be safe

Take care when you are coming home late at night. Be sure to walk in areas that are well lit or take a cab with a friend.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and it looks great on a resume.  Saint Mary's holds an annual volunteer fair in late September every year.  For more information, call the Career Development Centre at 902-420-5761.
