Where Tradition Meets the Future

In national surveys of universities in Canada, Maclean’s Magazine and Canadian Business Magazine give Saint Mary’s top marks for its high calibre programs.

Now celebrating its 200th anniversary — founded in 1802 — Saint Mary’s offers a full range of unique graduate and undergraduate programs, including forensic science, applied science, applied psychology, astronomy, environmental studies, Irish studies, Atlantic Canada studies, business administration, criminology, history, international development studies, philosophy and women’s studies. A wide selection of programs provide a co-op education option, allowing students to mix academics with practical skills.

The university awards more than $2.4 million in scholarships and bursaries to hundreds of students each year, and has a long tradition of international focus and extensive international experience. The international student body is made up of students from more than 80 countries around the world. Saint Mary’s has forged formal links in more than 35 countries around the world. The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) centre at the University offers year-round orientation programs.

The Frank H. Sobey Faculty of Commerce, one of Canada’s leading business schools, offers a PhD program in Management, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), a Bachelor of Commerce, and a large number of professional programs.

Saint Mary’s is home to a comprehensive and innovative Arts Faculty, with a diverse range of programs, and a Science Faculty widely known for its cutting-edge research and committment to students both in the classroom and research activity. The university has topnotch research equipment to conduct leading research, which includes a computerized chemistry laboratory, the only observatory in the region, and the region’s only Environmental Science and Ecosystem Remediation Centre.

The university is also home to Canada’s only CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, and the region’s only Atlantic Centre for Ethics and Public Affairs.

Specialty programs/most popular programs: The Faculty of Commerce offers a complete range of majors and minors at the undergraduate level, MBA, EMBA, Phd and many executive/professional programs both on campus and at its downtown location at the World Trade Centre. In Arts, a comprenhensive range of undergraduate programs is offered, including Criminology as well as interdisciplinary programs in Asian Studies, Atlantic Canada Studies, Women’s Studies, International Development Studies. A select number of graduate programs are available too. In Science, programs at both undergraduate and graduate include applied psychology, applied science, astronomy, forensic science, environmental studies.

The university is also a pioneer in making education accessible to all students. Special programs are available through the Atlantic Centre of Support for Students with Disabilities, including the Liberated Learning Project, a $1.2-million project that utilizes voice-activated computer technology to deliver classroom lectures.

The Huskies varsity sports teams enjoy an unparalleled history of excellence in university athletic competition, winning more than 40 AUAA and a number of CIAU Championships, including the 2001 and 2002 Vanier Cup, a record unmatched in Atlantic Canada.

The $18-million Sobey Building is a state-of-the-art facility that recently opened and rivals the best instructional facilities in North America. The university has completed its $25-million residence renovations project, providing students with high quality, community-centred residence life with all the 21st century conveniences. Every student living in residence can now plug in to the Internet, Saint Mary’s online courses and the large Patrick Power Library resources. This will add to the more than 1,000 Internet access ports located throughout the Sobey Building, Loyola Academic Complex, labs, offices, classrooms and students lounges throughout the campus.
