Saint Mary's University Professors Sign Licence for Greener Future

Two Saint Mary’s University professors whose Green Chemistry breakthroughs have shown strong potential for industrial applications have signed a licence agreement with GreenCentre Canada.

Dr. Robert Singer and Dr. Jason Clyburne have both attracted international attention for their research on Ionic Liquids.

Both licence agreements were negotiated with GreenCentre Canada in December through the Industry Liaison Office.  The agreements create a unique partnership between Saint Mary’s scientists and Green Center Canada experts.  Together, they will advance these technologies from laboratory prototypes to large scale pilot site testing.  This new phase of development will examine how these technologies perform ‘in the field’, and if successful, will move them closer to market.

Dr. Singer has developed novel compounds for removing metal ions from wastewater using what are known as “ionic liquids”   These specialized compounds can effectively remove a wide variety of metals from wastewater using less energy and without the risk of releasing toxic chemicals in the process.

Dr. Clyburne, who is also a Canada research chair in Environmental Studies and Materials, has developed new compounds for removing carbon dioxide from industrial gas emissions.  The ionic liquids have shown promise for the safe and efficient removal of toxins and environmentally hazardous substances from gaseous emissions and from industrial processes such as burning coal.

Both Saint Mary’s Professors have developed technologies that are now two of more than 20 promising discoveries currently licensed to GreenCentre for further development.   GreenCentre Canada is a national Centre of Excellence for developing, de-risking and commercializing early-stage Green Chemistry discoveries generated by academic researchers and industry
