Money Flows in for Tidal Energy Research
Saint Mary's University Professor Danika van Proosdij is awarded research funding from the Offshore Energy Environmental Research Association. |
Saint Mary’s University Professor Dr. Danika van Proosdij is diving into a new wave of critical research. The Geography Professor has been awarded $149.947 from the Offshore Energy Environmental Research Association to continue her study of the impacts of tidal turbines on Coastal areas such as the Bay of Fundy.
Dr. van Proosdij and her research team will gather information to better understand the behaviour of sediments in the upper Bay of Fundy under varying environmental and energy conditions. The data is vital in determining the effects on birds and fish populations.
Dr. van Proosdij has almost twenty years of experience conducting research in coastal environments across North America.
Her latest work will add value to industry and government partners involved in the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy’s initiative and benefit Nova Scotians by serving as a baseline for determining whether future changes caused by tidal turbines are outside the range of natural variability.
Dr. van Proosdij says her research team is in a good position to take full advantage of OEER’s funding opportunity and build on past projects. The research is an extension of her past projects with more advanced modelling, she says.
The OEER Association is dedicated to the development of offshore energy and environmental research. Their work includes examining renewable energy resources and their interaction with the marine environment.
