They were the words of wisdom and encouragement everyone was waiting to hear. In a world currently trapped in financial distress, innovators in Canada have the chance to shine.
Dr. Robert Kelly, Saint Mary’s University Chancellor and banking authority, spoke to Saint Mary’s University students, alumni, business leaders and guests, Friday, October 21s,t on the challenges and opportunities in the global economy. The former Saint Mary’s graduate is one the most prominent financial leaders in North America and offered his thoughts on how to shape Canada’s economic future and success.
Kelly reminded students that knowledge is power, and without knowledge, change will never come.
“I didn’t start reading business papers until my mid or late 20’s,” he said. “Then I realized I had to…I’m working in business.”
The more he learned about the world, the further he went.
Many of the challenges facing the globe today stem from a slew of poor decisions in the early 1990’s and an inability to recognize mistakes, said Kelly.
In the U.S, an enormous deficit lingers over the country. Kelly said there’s currently no plan in place to deal with the issue, and solutions may not take hold until the U.S. holds its next election.
“Huge economic shifts don’t happen overnight,” he said. “They take time.”
Along with a massive amount of debt, Kelly said he believes the U.S. will need to deal with issues such as their tax rate, heath care system and education programs.
“The United States historically has been really good at re-inventing themselves. Let’s see if they can do it again.”
While many other countries, such as those in Europe, are in the midst of an economic storm, said Kelly, Canada has taken the proper steps to ensure the country’s financial stability.
“Canada’s voice is much louder today than it was three or four years ago. We’re doing a great job on the debt front, deficit front, heath care front and education front.” To move forward, Kelly said, the country has to continue to challenge the world with innovative ideas.
“The objective of the game is to win.”
Kelly said students today have a great opportunity to meet that goal. “Canada is in awesome shape compared to most countries.”
