The Saint Mary’s University Women’s Hockey team is looking forward to hitting the ice October 19th for its season opener against Dalhousie, at 7pm in the SMU Alumni Arena.
Grateful for the community support, and the financial commitment made by Canadian Tire last March that helped ensure the continued success of the team, the women want to repay the kindness with a win.
“We’re ready,” says Sarah Maynard, a fourth year player and Assistant Team Captain for the Huskies. “I am very excited to be back on the ice. We all appreciate the support from Canadian Tire and the community. It means so much to our team.”New Head Coach Chris Larade said he wants to win, but his goal is to develop great people, not just great hockey players. That means in addition to working hard on the ice, they will be working hard in the community. They are already committed to on-ice development sessions with the local minor hockey association and to participating in a local charity game raising funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Port Hood, Cape Breton.
“As the home of hockey, Canadian Tire is happy to be involved with the Huskies and to kick-off the 2011-12 season. We look forward to joining the Halifax community in supporting these young women towards a championship” said John Jobin, Vice President, Merchandising, Canadian Tire.
