Two of Saint Mary’s University top researchers, Dr. Jeremy Lundholm and Dr. Leanne Philip of the Biology and Environmental Studies department are pioneering green roof technology in Halifax and are looking for your help.
The pair already run two experimental roofs on buildings at Saint Mary’s, but they would like to expand their research to a third site on the Halifax peninsula. They are looking for a partner interested in helping promote this world leading research which improves the environmental sustainability of buildings and municipalities.
Green roofs are mini eco-systems developed on the roofs of building in the middle of cities designed to improve the surrounding environment. They contribute to biodiversity in cities by providing a home for plants, insects and other organisms, but they also provide direct benefits to people in the form of energy savings to heat and cool buildings, and reduced stormwater management costs.
Unlike conventional green roofs, Dr. Lundholm and Dr. Philip’s internationally recognized research investigates the types of native species best suited for the Canadian climate.This is truly an opportunity to be part of an exciting new research development and here.
:Saint Mary’s University Requirements:
- A space to put the green roof system on for a minimum of three years (might not necessarily cover whole roof)
- At least 2000 sq. feet (more might be better) Loading capacity of at least 20 lbs/square foot
- Free access Monday to Friday
- Six stories preferred, but could go higher
- Ability to make walkways between trays for access
- Stair access to the roof (not a ladder, because they have to transport the system up there, tray by tray).
- Access to water or a hose would be an asset but not 100% necessary
- Saint Mary’s Provides

Free green roof for a building including: entire green roof system, including plants, and installation.
