Steve Davis pulls up the website for the Canadian Archaeological Association and scrolls down the list of past recipients of the Smith-Wintemberg Award, noting the names of friends, colleagues and at least one mentor. After the May 21 Award Ceremonies that conclude the 44th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Archaeological Association, Davis, a Professor Emeritus in Saint Mary’s Anthropology Department, will find his name added to this prestigious list.
Named for two archaeologists who laid the foundation for the discipline of archaeology, Harlan I. Smith and William J. Wintemberg, The Smith-Wintemberg Award recognizes outstanding achievement or service and honours members of the Canadian archaeological community who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the discipline of archaeology or to increasing knowledge of Canada’s archaeological past.
Steve Davis was nominated by Saint Mary’s professor Jonathan Fowler and provincial archaeologist, Katie Cottreau-Robins. A former student of Davis’s, Katie is the Chair of this year's CAA conference which takes place from May 18 to May 22 in Halifax’s Lord Nelson Hotel.
Saint Mary’s has a notable presence at this year’s CAA, with posters and presentations by an impressive number of faculty, students and alumni.
