2010 Year-End Radio and Video Review

Dr. Richard Homburg looks on as the first section of parking lot was removed to make way for the new Homburg Centre for Health and Wellness.

2010 has been a transformational year for Saint Mary's University. The $17 million Atrium and Global Learning Commons was officially opened, the iconic McNally Building has undergone substantial renovations and work on the new $8 Homburg Centre for Health and Wellness has begun to take shape.

Also during the year, the new Centre for Green Chemistry was launched, a Saint Mary's Confucius Institute Centre was opened, and the $45 million Hearts and Minds Capital Campaign wound up.

None of those achievements, however, could have been possible without the efforts of talented faculty and staff who left their own marks in 2010 by winning awards, volunteering their time or simply by working in new and innovative ways.

Much of the success has been documented in Saint Mary's This Week, newspapers articles and posting on the university web, but a great deal of it has also been shared with the wider community through stories on television and radio.

The list below is not intended as a comprehensive review of the television and radio press the university has received, but rather a sampling of stories that caught the interest of the community. Click on the links to see or hear the stories.

The Groundbreaking of the Homburg Centre - Construction of the new $8 million Homburg Centre for Health and Wellness got underway August 19. Designed as a multipurpose academic and athletic complex to inspire students, faculty, staff and the community to work toward healthier lifestyles, the Centre will feature wellness program space, studios, seminar rooms and community fitness/studio space.

Bioblitz - The annual effort to count all the plants and animals in the name of measuring biodiversity was focused at Crystal Crescent beach in 2010. In this interview a reporter talked with researchers and participants.

Mini-U - A radio report about high school students having a blast at a summer session put on by the athletics and recreation department.

Back from China - The University's international profile was underscored during this radio interview with student Laura Fitzpatrick after she returned from a summer session in China.

Removing Hazardous Materials from Industrial Waste - Dr. Jason Clyburne was interviewed about his development of ionic liquids, sustainable chemicals that can be used to remove CO2 from smoke stacks and heavy metals from water. The research is part of work carried out in conjunction with the new Centre for Green Chemistry.

Hearts and Minds Campaign End - Saint Mary’s wrapped up the most successful fundraising campaign in the history with a celebration honouring the donors and volunteers who made the effort possible. Launched in 2006, the campaign raised just over $45.4 million dollars, surpassing the campaign goal by more than 10 per cent.

Great Green Roof - Dr. Jeremy Lundholm, the driving force behind green roof research at Saint Mary’s, travelled to Vancouver to accept a Research Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the North American Green Roof Industry Association. In a radio interview Dr. Lundholm expalined how a green roof works.

O'Neill Report - The O'Neill Report describes and assesses the current state of the university system in the context of emerging financial and demographic challenges. Dr. Dodds was part of a radio panel discussion focused on the potential implications for Saint Mary's and other universities in the Halifax.
