SMU Alumnus Jack Buckley Passes Away

Saint Mary’s Alumnus and honorary doctorate holder, Jack Buckley passed away November 8, 2010 at his home in Halifax. A funeral service was held Saturday, November 13 in his honor. In 1997, Jack was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contributions to post secondary education.

Jack was an accomplished and well respected teacher and administrator for thirty-five years in colleges and universities in Nova Scotia and Ontario. During those years, he worked and traveled extensively in projects of international education, mainly in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. He was a consultant with the World Bank and led several projects for CIDA and The Association of Canadian Community Colleges.

Leaving his position of Dean of the School of Business at Humber College, Toronto, he returned to Nova Scotia in 1990 and became the founding President of the Nova Scotia Community College. Through extensive new program development to meet the changing training needs of Nova Scotia's new economies, NSCC became a vital partner in post secondary education. His years at NSCC were the most rewarding of his career where his leadership was marked with a quiet dignity and trustfulness.
