Auction for the Art Gallery
|
"Inictut, Arouk Fjord", Greenland, 1988, is just one of the items up for auction by Crowther and Brayley on October 23 |
Saint Mary's University is establishing a new fund in honour of Jane Shaw, noted Canadian watercolour artist, and Tony Law, a Canadian naval war artist and the first curator and artist-in-residence of Saint Mary's University Art Gallery.
Recently, the university received a number of art works includes paintings, drawings, ceramics and other works by the Laws and by other artists. The Gallery has undertaken an examination of the donated works to determine which will be added to the Permanent Collection.
A number of works, however, will be offered for sale, with the net proceeds used to benefit the Collection at Saint Mary's Art Gallery. The sale is being conducted by Crowther and Brayley on October 23. The items up for bid can be viewed at http://www.crowther-brayley.com/
Net proceeds from the sale of artworks and other objects from the auction will go to a new fund to be known as the Jane Shaw Law & C. Anthony Law Permanent Collection Fund. This Shaw Law Fund will support purchases of new artwork and pay for expenses associated with the Collection, such as conservation work.
“The Fund will serve as an ongoing memorial to the contributions of these two artists, whose efforts while they were alive did much to strengthen the artistic community in Nova Scotia and, in particular, Saint Mary's University Art Gallery,” says Robin Metcalfe, Director/Curator of the Gallery.
“Their generosity will be acknowledged in labels and literature associated with works that are purchased or that undergo conservation work with the support of the new fund. It is fitting that the names of Jane Shaw Law and Tony Law will continue to be associated the Permanent Collection of Saint Mary's University Art Gallery and with the work of living artists.“
