Saint Mary’s community will try and raise $50,000 for the United Way, Steve Sarty, Athletics Director and Chair of this year’s United Way Campaign announced Thursday at the kick-off barbeque.

‘We’re just looking to give people the opportunity to give back to their community,’ said Sarty to the 100 people in attendance for the annual barbeque and tug-of-war.

Sarty was joined by Saint Mary’s University President, Dr. Colin Dodds in kicking off this year’s two week campaign, that will see faculty, staff, and student-athletes canvassing door-to-door in the neighbourhood, asking the community for their support of the United Way.

As the centerpiece of the kick-off, Dr. Dodds led a team of Huskies football players to victory in the fifth annual tug-of-war that pits a group of faculty members and staff against one of SMU’s varsity teams. The athletes lead the series 3-2.

United Way representative, Emma Martin, encouraged those in attendance to give generously and to feel safe in knowing that funds raised in the HRM will be used to support the over 100 programs in the HRM.
