Garner Scores Sobey Award for Business Excellence

Commerce student Erin Garner was one of six business students in Atlantic Canada to receive the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies.

Erin Garner’s educational and entrepreneurial dreams got a $10,000 boost recently when the fourth year Commerce student was selected to receive a 2010 Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies.

One of six students in Atlantic Canada to be awarded the prize, organizers say Garner was selected because of her academic standing, entrepreneurial interest, extracurricular and community activities, and career aspirations.

“Each year, we review applications from top business students throughout Atlantic Canada and each year, we find the level of academic excellence, leadership skills and the entrepreneurial spirit of the students simply outstanding,” said David F. Sobey, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies.

The cash infusion is the second in as many months for Garner. In late November she beat out 29 students to take home a $1,000 prize as winning of the “You’re Hired” Scotiabank Interview Competition held at Dalhousie University.

The annual mock interview competition provides an opportunity for finance students to develop interview skills and gives them the chance to network with various employers.

Garner, a finance major, has held multiple positions with the Student Association. She has been involved in study abroad programs in France, Costa Rica and Northern Ireland with the Conflict Resolution Initiative and participated in many student business competitions, including the Inter-Collegiate Business Case Competition at Queen’s University, the Rotman’s Trading Competition and last year’s Trumped Competition.

Erin plans to start a career in commercial banking, continue to travel, work toward an MBA and someday be a business owner.

The Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies has put more than $760,000 into the hands of aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs since 1989.
