Dr. Charles Speaks to World Trade Organization
Dr. Tony Charles |
Sobey School of Business Professor Dr. Tony Charles is in Geneva, Switzerland this week to present a public lecture at the World Trade Organization.
Dr. Charles, who also teaches in the Environmental Studies Program, will be discussing the state of subsidy reforms in the current round of global trade negotiations, and how to avoid negative impacts on developing countries.
The particular focus of Dr. Charles’ presentation is on international trade in fish products, and how both ocean conservation and the well-being of small-scale fisheries could be affected by changes in the ‘rules of trade’.
“This is an honour to be invited to as significant an international body as the World Trade Organization”, says Dr. Charles. “I hope to be able to get across the key message of the need to balance trade reform, environmental concern, and the needs of poor fishers around the world.”
Dr. Charles has also been invited to meet individually with trade delegations from several countries, to provide further information on these subjects.
