Saint Mary's Grad on Development Internship in the Caribbean
Saint Mary's grad Dave Rideout is spending the next months in the Caribbean, but he won't have much time for frolicking on the beach.
The Halifax native is working with a small network of farms in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to help them to increase regional and international trade, and ensure the sustainable future of agriculture in the West Indies.
Rideout was selected as one of 20 youth interns participating in the Coady International Institute's Youth In Partnership Program.
"As an intern with the Caribbean Farmer's Network, I'll be researching ways to better provide training programs, foster partnerships and facilitate information exchange amongst farming organizations in 13 Caribbean countries," said Rideout prior to his departure. "As a young communications and development professional, I'm looking forward to working in an industry so vital to that region of the world."
"I had been searching high and low for a job opportunity that would demand the use of all of my post-secondary training," said Rideout, an International Development Studies graduate from Saint Mary's University and Public Relations graduate from the Nova Scotia Community College.
Rideout says that the Youth In Partnership program will allow him to expand his range of work experience, while contributing to positive growth in the Caribbean farming industry. "I value the opportunity to work internationally in a world that is more and more interconnected each day," he says.
The Coady International Institute's Youth In Partnership program gives Canadian university graduates experience working with development organizations in their field of study. The program helps them increase their understanding of global development issues while contributing to the Coady Institute's overseas partnerships.
