Media Release For Immediate Release July 19, 2010 Memorial for Dr. Hari Das
There will be a memorial service for Professor Dr. Hari Das Thursday, July 22nd in the Unilever Lounge, Fourth Floor, Sobey School of Business. The ceremony will run 2 PM – 4 PM. Dr. Das passed away last week. He joined the university in 1978. He was a Management Professor with the Sobey School of Business. He was a well respected professor and a prolific author. With the family's permission, a group of Dr. Das friends and colleagues have established a scholarship in his name. His obituary: DAS, Hari - Professor Hari Das of Bedford passed away on July 9th, 2010. He was born in Chekkode Village, Kerala, India to K.M. Sridhar and T.P. Devaki, also of Chekkode. He obtained his Bachelor of Commerce from Loyola College in Chennai. After completing an MBA at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, and an MSc and PhD at the University of British Columbia, Professor Das came to Halifax to join the Faculty of Commerce at Saint Mary's University in 1978. Over 32 years at Saint Mary's, Professor Das was Chair of the Department of Management and Director of the Executive MBA program as well as a much-loved instructor. He authored five management textbooks, including Canadian Human Resource Management, the leading text in the field. He was a widely published scholar with over 75 articles to his credit. Professor Das was also an avid photographer, film-maker and writer of fiction. He produced two feature films as well as many short movies and documentaries. He wrote two novels and several short stories. His artistic work spanned multiple languages: English as well as Tamil and Malayalam. Besides his wife, Mallika Das, daughter, Nitya Das, and son-in-law, John Acevedo, Professor Das is survived by his sister Sathi Moses, and nephew, Ian Moses, both of Australia. A memorial service is being held at Saint Mary's Univerity. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ladies of the Sacred Heart at Halifax, 811-325 Dalhousie Street, Ottawa, ON, K1N 7G2.
