Former SMUSA Head Scores Byelection Win
Zach Churchill |
Zach Churchill, former President of the Saint Mary's University Student Association (SMUSA) beat out five opponents to win the riding of Yarmouth in a provincial byelection Tuesday.
The 26 year-old has been involved with politics and public service since elementary school when he was co-president of the Students’ Council at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School.
At Saint Mary’s University, he served as president of the Students' Association for two years, representing over 8,000 students. He was part of a team of student leaders that successfully lobbied the provincial legislature to deliver a tuition rebate to Nova Scotian students.
After leaving Saint Mary’s, he was elected as the National Director of the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, representing over 300,000 students across Canada. While there he spearheaded the organization’s lobbying efforts in Ottawa to secure an annual $350 million investment in grants for low and middle income students and a one-time $2 billion investment for infrastructure on campuses across Canada.
Churchill was one of two Liberals to win June 22. Geoff MacLellan, 31, took the riding of Glace Bay.
In his victory speech, Churchill said it is important to work across party lines and bringing people together to reach a common goal.
